A comprehensive method to optimize 3+2 axis end-milling of free-form surfaces with a toroidal cutter

open access: yesThe International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology
In manufacturing context a free-form surface is a surface that is neither prismatic nor of revolution. End-milling of free-form surfaces on multi-axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines is a complex and expensive operation involved in the production of many high-value-added parts, such as molds and stamping dies.

Contour Quality Evaluation of the Toroidal Cutter

International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2001
A toroidal cutter is an effective tool for use in the machining of freeform surfaces. Its contact point on the machined surface creates a second-order continuous curvature, thus the scallop height is decreasing if the cutter axis is inclined at a suitable angle against the machined surface.

The Research of Cutter-Location Optimization for Flank Milling Blades of Undevelopable Ruled Surfaces with Toroidal-End Cutter

Materials Science Forum, 2014
To improve the efficiency and precision of five-axis numerical control machining for undevelopable ruled surfaces,a cutter-location optimization algorithm was proposed for flank milling of blades with a toroidal-end cutter. Firstly, it is established initial cutter-location of toroidal-end cutter by optimizing algorithm of three-point offset based on ...

Models for contour quality evaluation of a toroidal cutter with a concave-arc generator

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2002
Abstract This paper presents models for evaluating the contour quality of a toroidal cutter with a concave-arc generator and a cylindrical shank. Taking the axis of the minimum circumscribed cylinder of measured data on the cutter shank as the datum axis, models are developed to investigate the minimum circumscribed concave-arc revolving surface and ...
