Morphologic information about two individuals of Torpedo peruana from the Colombian Pacific coast is presented. The species had not been reported before from tropical South American waters; this finding ratifies its validity after its redescription.

Amphibdellid (monogenean) parasites of electric rays (Torpedinidae) [PDF]
Electric rays (Torpedinidae) are known to harbour on their gills certain monogenean parasites (Amphibdella spp. and Amphibdelloides spp.) whose taxonomy is in a very confused state. Muchof this confusion has centred around a single morphological feature: a ‘transverse bar’ has been variously held to be present or absent from the adhesive apparatus, or ...

Due to their basal position in the vertebrate phylogenetic tree, the study on elasmobranch genetics and cytogenetics can provide remarkable information on the mechanisms underlying the evolution of all vertebrates. In recent years, different molecular approaches have been used to study the relationships between the different taxonomic groups of ...

A Review of the Status of Sharks, Rays and Chimaeras of Panama to Guide Research and Conservation
ABSTRACT Chondrichthyan fishes (sharks, rays and chimaeras) are a group of high conservation concern globally. Species are impacted by varying threats, although fishing pressure is the primary stressor causing population declines. Panama comprises both Pacific and Caribbean coastlines with a diversity of estuarine and marine habitats supporting small ...

A CHECK-LIST OF FOSSIL CHONDRICHTHYES FROM BRIELAS (LANGHIAN, PORTUGAL) [PDF]
Located in a slope of the Costa de Caparica motorway, in the peninsula of Setúbal, West Portugal, the outcrop of Brielas stand out as one of the best Miocene sections of the Lower Tagus Basin to collect a great diversity of fossil Chondrichthyes, which ...

Mitigating the effect of by‐catch on endangered marine life
Fishing gears cause substantial impacts on the oceans and their ecosystems, and many marine animals, such as sea turtles, marine mammals, seabirds and elasmobranchs, end up as by ‐catch. In this paper, the most effective mitigation measures were investigated for each group, taking into account the fishing gear with which they interact most.

Consumption to biomass (Q/B) ratio and estimates of Q/B-predictor parameters for Caribbean fishes [PDF]
Estimates of the Q/B ratio and parameters of equations to 'predict' Q/B values for 116 fish stocks in the Gulf of Salamanca, Colombia are presented. A compilation of these estimates available for Caribbean Sea fishes (264 stocks) is also provided for ...

Trait‐Based Indicators of Marine Communities' Sensitivity to Climate Change and Fishing
ABSTRACT Aim Overexploitation of wildlife and anthropogenic climate change are key drivers of global biodiversity loss. Investigating how these stressors interact and affect ecosystems is critical for conservation efforts. Following trait‐based vulnerability assessments, we propose two community‐level sensitivity indicators: climate change (SCC) and ...

Biofluorescence in Catsharks (Scyliorhinidae): Fundamental Description and Relevance for Elasmobranch Visual Ecology. [PDF]
Biofluorescence has recently been found to be widespread in marine fishes, including sharks. Catsharks, such as the Swell Shark (Cephaloscyllium ventriosum) from the eastern Pacific and the Chain Catshark (Scyliorhinus retifer) from the western Atlantic,

Schematic representation of the sampling method. Surface sampling is conducted from a boat with a pump allowing live water filtration through an enclosed capsule. Bottom sampling is performed simultaneously on the same transect, with an underwater pump connected to an enclosed capsule and fixed on a DPV driven by a diver.
