The mutual influence of translational and rotational spherical particle movements in calm water was studied using experimental data and numerical simulation. Spherical balls with a density close to that of water were speeded up in special devices, which ensured the required ball rotational and translational velocity in the given plane.

Drag Torque in Disk Brakes: Significance, Measurement and Challenges
SAE International Journal of Commercial Vehicles, 2015<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Drag torque is generated in disk brakes as a result of contact (dynamic friction) between brake disk and brake pads when the braking system is not actuated. Among the negative implications of drag torque are, notably, dispensable additional fuel consumption as well as increased ...

Stiff String Torque and Drag: Choosing a Realistic Tortuosity Model
IADC/SPE Asia Pacific Drilling Technology Conference and Exhibition, 2022Abstract Selection of the correct tortuosity model is critical when performing a pre-planning stiff string torque and drag analysis. Various tortuosity models exist in the literature however selection and calibration can be complicated. This paper presents a methodology to aid in selecting an appropriate tortuosity model as well as real ...

Fluid Circulation Effects on Torque and Drag Results, Modeling, and Validation
SPE Drilling & Completion, 2023Summary The hydraulic effects on torque and drag modeling have been thoroughly studied in the past, yet their interpretation still causes a lot of misunderstandings and confusion. Historical models disregard the circulation effects and focus on the fluid mass by employing buoyancy forces based on the Archimedes principle.

Engineers’ Trilemma: Use and Limitation of Torque and Drag Models
SPE/IADC International Drilling Conference and Exhibition, 2023Abstract Different methods to calculate torque and drag have been used by the oil industry for years. Various assumptions are used in formulating these models. Opinions have often varied as to which model is better and whether the assumptions are valid. This paper discusses the trilemma considerations for an engineer 1. Soft string model

Quantifying Tortuosities by Friction Factors in Torque and Drag Model
SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2002Abstract Tortuosity occurs when a well deviates from a straight hole. The most commonly known tortuosity is the local dogleg severity variation associated with the use of steerable motors in "slide/drill/slide" drilling. However, there is a tortuosity that exists in many wells, which the authors will refer to as "micro-tortuosity" in ...

Calculation and Analysis on Drag Torque of the Wet Clutch
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015In order to study the drag torque characteristics of wet clutch, the drag torque with no groove friction plates and with radial groove friction plates were analysed separately, and the influence factors of the drag torque such as the lubricating oil temperature, the depth of the groove, the average gap between the friction plates were also discussed ...

Torque and Drag-Two Factors in Extended-Reach Drilling
Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1994Summary This paper addresses the various aspects of torque and drag problems encountered in drilling extended-reach wells. It discusses how to use torque and drag calculations and measurements to plan long-reach well profiles, to execute drilling operations that minimize torque and drag effects, to monitor hole ...
