Force and torque acting on particles in a transitionally rough open channel flow

open access: yes, 2011
Direct numerical simulation of open channel flow over a geometrically rough wall has been performed at a bulk Reynolds number of approximately 2900. The wall consisted of a layer of spheres in a square arrangement. Two cases have been considered.

Grip and Grasp: Lizard Claw Inspired Robotic Manipulators

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Our study identifies the most effective lizard claw shape for use as an end effector in a bioinspired robotic manipulator. By examining key geometric features and combining them into comparative indices, the Crotaphytus collaris claw is found to be the best fit.

Motion of a sphere in the presence of a plane interface. Part 2. An exact solution in bipolar co-ordinates [PDF]

open access: yes, 1980
A general solution for Stokes’ equation in bipolar co-ordinates is derived, and then applied to the arbitrary motion of a sphere in the presence of a plane fluid/fluid interface.

Dust Settling and Rapid Planetary Migration

open access: yes, 2010
Planetary migration is essential to explain the observed mass-period relation for exoplanets. Without some stopping mechanism, the tidal, resonant interaction between planets and their gaseous disc generally causes the planets to migrate inward so ...
