Vertical axis wind turbine drive train transient dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
Start up of a vertical axis wind turbine causes transient torque oscillations in the drive train with peak torques which may be over two and one half times the rated torque of the turbine.

Unified theory of magnetization dynamics with relativistic and nonrelativistic spin torques

open access: yes, 2018
Spin torques play a crucial role in operative properties of modern spintronic devices. To study current-driven magnetization dynamics, spin-torque terms providing the action of spin-polarized currents have previously often been added in a ...

Spin transfer torques

open access: yesJournal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2008
This tutorial article introduces the physics of spin transfer torques in magnetic devices. We provide an elementary discussion of the mechanism of spin transfer torque, and review the theoretical and experimental progress in this field. Our intention is to be accessible to beginning graduate students.

Multiband Switchable Microwave Absorbing Metamaterials Based on Reconfigurable Kirigami–Origami

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A reconfigurable metamaterial featuring tunable microwave‐absorbing and load‐bearing performance is proposed. Stretchable kirigami and bistable origami configurations are integrated as actuating components, and the synergistic deformation mechanisms are systematically analyzed.

Current induced torques and interfacial spin-orbit coupling: Semiclassical Modeling

open access: yes, 2013
In bilayer nanowires consisting of a ferromagnetic layer and a non-magnetic layer with strong spin-orbit coupling, currents create torques on the magnetization beyond those found in simple ferromagnetic nanowires.

Bio‐Friendly Artificial Muscles Based on Carbon Nanotube Yarns and Eutectogel Derivatives

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solid‐state artificial muscles based on coiled commercial carbon nanotube yarns coated with eutectogel derivatives exhibit unipolar actuation through selective ion intercalation. Combining polyanionic and polycationic gels enables enhanced contractile stroke and high energy density.

Evaluation of biomechanical loads for three-dimensional soaking postures in bathwater

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanical Science and Engineering, 2020
Comfort is required for soaking in bathwater. Although several studies investigated comfort during soaking from a biomechanical viewpoint, these previous studies employed two-dimensional models in the sagittal plane of a bather.

Exploiting Two‐Photon Lithography, Deposition, and Processing to Realize Complex 3D Magnetic Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Two‐photon lithography (TPL) enables 3D magnetic nanostructures with unmatched freedom in geometry and material choice. Advances in voxel control, deposition, and functionalization open pathways to artificial spin ices, racetracks, microrobots, and a number of additional technological applications.

Current-induced domain wall motion in antiferromagnetically coupled structures: Fundamentals and applications

open access: yesJournal of Science: Advanced Materials and Devices, 2018
The current-induced spin-torques provide an efficient means of manipulating magnetization, introducing the way for next generation spintronic devices. During the past decades, studies have mainly focused on ferromagnetic materials.
