Spawning, larval development and settlement behaviour of Gibbula cineraria (Gastropoda: Prosobranchia) with a reappraisal of torsion in gastropods

open access: closedMarine Biology, 1972
Cultures of developing larvae of Gibbula cineraria (L.) were obtained from adults spawning in the laboratory, and these cultures were reared to settlement of the larvae at 9 days. Dispersal of the outer jelly coat of the egg appeared to be delayed in the presence of spermatozoa.

Development of Lacuna pallidula (da Costa, 1778) from the White Sea (Caenogastropoda: Littorinimorpha) with emphasis on radula formation

Journal of molluscan studies, 2023
The gastropod radula is highly diverse in structure in comparison with that of other mollusсs. The main radular types in the different phylogenetic groups of gastropods differ not only in the general morphology and configuration of the teeth but also ...

TGF-&bgr; signalling is involved in torsion and shell positioning in the giant ramshorn snail Marisa cornuarietis (Gastropoda: Ampullariidae)

Journal of molluscan studies, 2018
Shell internalization has evolved convergently multiple times in numerous molluscan clades, including various gastropod families. Previous experiments on the early ontogeny of the caenogastropod Marisa cornuarietis and of a pulmonate species revealed ...

Adnexal Torsion: Review of Radiologic Appearances.

Radiographics, 2021
Adnexal torsion is the twisting of the ovary, and often of the fallopian tube, on its ligamental supports, resulting in vascular compromise and ovarian infarction.

On a Ciliary Process of Food‐collecting in the Gastropod Turritella communis Risso

, 2009
SUMMARY. The mantle-cavity of Turritella communis has an inhalent aperture on the left side and an exhalent one on the right. The former is guarded by a complex array of tentacles preventing the ingress of large particles.

Early differentiating neuron in larval abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana) reveals the relationship between ontogenetic torsion and crossing of the pleurovisceral nerve cords

Evolution & Development, 2006
SUMMARY Crossing of the pleurovisceral nerve cords in gastropods has supported the view that gastropods evolved by 180° rotation between the ventral and dorsal body regions.

Ontogenetic Torsion and Protoconch Form in the Archaeogastropod Haliotis kamtschatkana: Evolutionary Implications

, 1997
Ontogenetic torsion in archaeogastropods has strongly influenced theories about early gastropod evolution, but the seminal studies by Crofts (1937, 1955) remain the major source of information about tissue movements during this developmental process ...

Torsion in Patella caerulea (Mollusca, Patellogastropoda): ontogenetic process, timing, and mechanisms

, 2005
. Torsion is a process in gastropod ontogenesis where the visceral body portion rotates 180° relative to the head/foot region. We investigated this process in the limpet Patella caerulea by using light microscopy of living larvae, as well as scanning ...

Intermediate Stages in the Embryonic Development of the Gastropod Ilyanassa obsoleta: a Scanning Electron Microscope Study

, 1987
Summary Scanning electron microscopy was used to study embryonic development of the mud snail, Ilyanassa obsoleta, from the fourth to the seventh day of development (70 to 165 hr post-trefoil at 20° C).
