Giant tortoise genomes provide insights into longevity and age-related disease

open access: yesNature Ecology & Evolution, 2018
Giant tortoises are among the longest-lived vertebrate animals and, as such, provide an excellent model to study traits like longevity and age-related diseases. However, genomic and molecular evolutionary information on giant tortoises is scarce.

The Tortoise and the Hut

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2011

Origami‐Inspired Structural Design for Aquatic‐Terrestrial Amphibious Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a lightweight amphibious origami robot actuated by a single shape memory alloy wire. A rigid foldable origami structure with displacement amplification enables efficient terrestrial crawling and aquatic swimming. The addition of fan‐shaped units allows controllable turning in both environments.

Behavioural Impact of Captive Management Changes in Three Species of Testudinidae

open access: yesJournal of Zoological and Botanical Gardens, 2022
Reptile behaviour and welfare are understudied in comparison with mammals. In this study, behavioural data on three species (Astrochelys radiata, Stigmochelys pardalis, Aldabrachelys gigantea) of tortoises were recorded before and after an environmental ...

The hardness of the iconic must: Can Peirce’s existential graphs assist modal epistemology? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Charles Peirce’s diagrammatic logic - the Existential Graphs - is presented as a tool for illuminating how we know necessity, in answer to Benacerraf’s famous challenge that most “semantics for mathematics” do not “fit an acceptable epistemology”.
