Failure to Medically Optimize Before Total Hip Arthroplasty: Which Modifiable Risk Factor Is the Most Dangerous?

open access: yesArthroplasty Today, 2021
Background: There is mounting evidence that smoking, abnormal body mass index (BMI), uncontrolled diabetes, and poor nutritional status are associated with complications after total hip arthroplasty (THA).

A randomised, controlled, double blind, non-inferiority trial of ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca block vs. spinal morphine for analgesia after primary hip arthroplasty [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We performed a single centre, double blind, randomised, controlled, non-inferiority study comparing ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca block with spinal morphine for the primary outcome of 24-h postoperative morphine consumption in patients undergoing ...

Comparison of External Rotation Torque of Short External Rotator Muscles in Hip Flexion Position

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Research, EarlyView.
Preserving the short external rotator muscles of the hip helps prevent dislocation after total hip arthroplasty, but it's unclear which muscles are most critical. This study quantified the external rotation torque in cadaveric hips and found that the obturator externus provides the highest torque during deep hip flexion, where dislocations often occur.

Influence of cementless hip stems on femoral cortical strain pattern depending on their extent of porous coating [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The extent of porous coating of cementless total hip stems is held responsible for radiological periprosthetic changes, the rate of thigh pain, and even its long-term success.

Reduced Muscle Strength Can Alter the Impact of Gait Modifications on Knee Cartilage Mechanics

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Muscle strength can substantially influence knee joint loading, stability, and cartilage biomechanics, all of which are important factors in the onset and progression of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Noninvasive rehabilitation methods, such as gait modifications, are suggested to effectively alter knee joint loading, potentially helping to ...

Revision hip replacement by minimally invasive technique with anterior approach: three case study [PDF]

open access: yesRomanian Journal of Medical Practice
Revision total hip arthroplasty is becoming more and more popular, the surgical approach can vary based on anatomy, patient position, experience, and surgeon habits. The posterior incision is often chosen by surgeons while the current literature has very

Vibroacoustography for the assessment of total hip arthroplasty [PDF]

open access: yesClinics, 2013
This paper proposes imaging with 3-dimensional vibroacoustography for postoperatively assessing the uncovered cup area after total hip arthroplasty as a quantitative criterion to evaluate implant fixation.A phantom with a bone-like structure covered by a tissue-mimicking material was used to simulate a total hip arthroplasty case.

A Machine Learning Approach to Microcalorimetric Pattern Classification of Pathogens in Synovial Fluid

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) is a promising tool for diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), based on real‐time measurement of growth‐related heat production of pathogens, and faster than conventional microbial cultures. However, the feasibility of identifying specific pathogens in clinical samples using IMC has yet to be proven.

Anemia, Abnormal Body Mass Index, and Sarcopenia Increase Complication Risk in Patients Undergoing Surgical Treatment for Metastatic Bone Disease

open access: yesJournal of Surgical Oncology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Metastatic bone disease (MBD) is a common complication of primary cancers and is typically managed surgically. Overall health status and nutritional optimization are essential in surgical outcomes. The objective of this study was to report the intersectionality of previously studied laboratory, imaging, and clinical ...
