Disc arthroplasty: lessons learned from total joint arthroplasty
The Spine Journal, 2004With the rapid emergence of new disc arthroplasty designs and ongoing clinical trials, there is great anticipation among clinicians. Inevitably there will be challenges associated with adoption of this new technology. Potential lessons learned from the extensive experience with extremity arthroplasty may predict some of the perils and pitfalls ...

Postoperative Ileus After Total Joint Arthroplasty
The Journal of Arthroplasty, 2008We evaluated the incidence and risk factors for postoperative ileus (POI) after total joint arthroplasty in a consecutive group of patients between January 2004 and December 2005 using regional anesthesia and multimodal pain management protocols. Postoperative ileus developed in 31 (0.7%) of 4567 patients. Of these patients, 21 (67.7%) were men, and 10

Rehabilitation and Total Joint Arthroplasty
Clinics in Geriatric Medicine, 2012The long-term outcomes following primary TJA for OA are favorable. However, surgery alone fails to fully restore physical function and address longstanding impairments associated with chronic joint disease. Older adults undergoing TJA can gain similar benefits as those who are younger; however, the elderly are at increased risk for adverse events ...

Multimodal Analgesia for Total Joint Arthroplasty
Orthopedics, 2015Optimal perioperative pain control for total joint arthroplasty remains a challenge. Whereas traditional regimens have relied heavily on opioids, newer multimodal pathways are increasingly gaining popularity as safer and more effective alternatives.

Total joint arthroplasty in cancer patients
The Journal of Arthroplasty, 2015Increasing numbers of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) patients have a history, or an active diagnosis, of cancer. We aimed to evaluate the risk of early postoperative complications in these patients. In our series, a history of malignancy was associated with an elevated risk of ischemic cardiac events and postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT), while ...

Pathokinesiology and Total Joint Arthroplasty
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1993Gait analysis data relating to total joint arthroplasty were reviewed to assess their impact on the evolution of prosthetic design. Although joint replacement designs have led to clinical improvement, they do not yet permit the restoration of normal gait.

Pulmonary Embolism in Total Joint Arthroplasty
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1993With a greater understanding of the prevention of thromboembolic complications, the incidence of fatal pulmonary embolism after total joint arthroplasty has declined. Although much of our knowledge is centered around deep vein thrombosis and its use as a marker for thromboembolic complications, little is known about the natural history of both ...

Control of the disease activity is enabled due to the progress of drug therapy for rheumatoid arthritis. However, surgical treatments are necessary for unresponsive cases to the drug or for achieving higher QOL, and we can attain more tight control or cure by combination of drug therapy and surgical treatments.
