Biomaterials in Total Joint Arthroplasty

2018
Total joint arthroplasties have increased significantly in number over the past several decades and appear to continue to increase exponentially in correlation with the demands of an aging population. The multifaceted approach to providing patients with a lasting implant is divided among the patient characteristics, surgical skills, and the ...

Increased Postoperative Glucose Variability Is Associated with Adverse Outcomes Following Total Joint Arthroplasty

Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. American volume, 2018
Background: Increased glucose variability during hospitalization has been associated with a longer length of stay in the hospital and a higher mortality rate following non-orthopaedic surgical procedures.

Total knee arthroplasty in Charcot's joint

The Journal of Arthroplasty, 1993
The authors report three cases with neuropathic (Charcot) knee joint due to tabes dorsalis in which total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was performed. Three cases (5 joints) were observed for more than 8 years after TKA. No ataxia was seen before or after surgery.

The Effect of Depression on Patient-Reported Outcomes After Total Joint Arthroplasty Is Modulated by Baseline Mental Health: A Registry Study

Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. American volume, 2018
Background: Depression and poor mental health are known to be negative predictors of patient-reported outcomes after total joint arthroplasty. Although previous studies have examined these risk factors in isolation to each other, they are, in reality ...

Prevention of sepsis in total joint arthroplasty

Journal of Hospital Infection, 1996
Because of the adoption of effective prophylactic measures such as improved operating room techniques and systemic antibiotics, the prosthetic infection rate for artificial joint procedures has been reduced to 1-2%. However, because of the devastating results and large number of prosthetic procedures, prosthetic infection remains a major challenge ...

Preventing Infection in Total Joint Arthroplasty

Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, 2010
Recent projections have forecast that by the year 2030 the number of primary total knee arthroplasty procedures will increase to 3.48 million, an increase of 673% compared with 2005, and the number of primary total hip arthroplasties will increase by 174% to 572,000, with the expectant result being that over 4 million primary total joint arthroplasties

MR Imaging with Metal-suppression Sequences for Evaluation of Total Joint Arthroplasty.

Radiographics, 2016
Metallic artifact at orthopedic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging continues to be an important problem, particularly in the realm of total joint arthroplasty. Complications often follow total joint arthroplasty and can be expected for a small percentage of

Transfusion options in total joint arthroplasty

The Journal of Arthroplasty, 2002
Concern about the safety of allogeneic blood transfusion, including the risk of viral infection and immunosuppression, has led to the development of transfusion options in total joint arthroplasty, including intraoperative and postoperative blood salvage, autologous donation, hemodilution, and the use of epoetin alfa.
