Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is used to manage knee arthritis when conservative measures have failed. Most TKA is made up of distal femoral/tibial components with tibial and patellar polyethylene. TKA designs can be grouped by level of constraint to cruciate retaining, posterior stabilized, constrained non-hinged, and constrained hinged.

Alignment of total knee arthroplasty
The Journal of Arthroplasty, 1989A series of 65 total knee arthroplasties performed by the senior author was evaluated to determine the effect of alignment on outcome. Radiographs and results of clinical examination were reviewed. Sixty-one of the 65 knees were in varus on the mechanical axis (ie, the weight-bearing line passed through the medial compartment).

Failed Total Knee Arthroplasty
JBJS Reviews, 2014Total knee arthroplasty is one of the most successful interventions for reducing knee pain and for improving function and quality of life. Advances in implant materials and design as well as surgical technique have increased the longevity of prostheses and have decreased the rate of revision surgery to

Total Joint Arthroplasty of the Knee
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1985The total knee experience at a hospital in Baltimore with the Universal Instruments and Total Condylar and Kinematic prostheses in 1978 and 1979, and with the PCA prosthesis with and without cement since 1980, has led to the development of the philosophy that impacts on all aspects of total knee arthroplasty.

Results of total knee arthroplasty
Journal of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, 2012Total knee arthroplasty was applied to 187 knees of 144 patients at Ondokuz Mayis Uni-versity School of Medicine and Research Hospital, Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, between January 2007 and December 2008. Included in this study were 53 knees of 40 patients with adequate follow-up.

Abstract Much of the decision making processes in surgery of the arthritic conditions of the knee have changed drastically in the last 10 years. With the success of total knee arthroplasty fusion has been limited to infection, multiply-failed arthroplasty and some cases of Charcot arthropathy, and the role for osteotomy has been significantly reduced.

Total Knee Arthroplasty Kinematics
The Journal of Arthroplasty, 2019Knee kinematics is an analysis of motion pattern that is utilized to assess a comparative, biomechanical performance of healthy nonimplanted knees, injured nonimplanted knees, and various prosthetic knee designs. Unfortunately, a consensus between implanted knee kinematics and outcomes has not been reached.

Total knee arthroplasty has become a procedure popular as total hip replacement. One of the reasons is that the results are nowadays as good as those of total hip replacement. Three main principles form the basis of a prosthetic device: the constrained, which is a hingelike prosthesis and whose initial designer was Walldius; the semiconstrained, with ...

The Evolution of Total Knee Arthroplasty
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1976The current status of knee replacement surgery suggests that high density polyethylene and chrome cobalt alloy or stainless steel are acceptable materials for use in the intra-articular environment of the knee; that prosthetic components of knee units can be firmly fixed in bone with methylmethacrylate; and that a wide range of prosthetic units are ...

Instruments for total knee arthroplasty continue to be refined. Most systems develop the implants and the instruments at the same time with two different teams leading the investigations. There is no question that the more accurate the surgery performed, the better the result and longevity of the prosthesis.
