Results of Near-Total Laryngectomy

Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, 1998
The clinical records of 225 patients undergoing primary or salvage near-total laryngectomy (NTL) for laryngeal and pyriform cancer were analyzed for local control and morbidity. If the primary cancer was laryngeal in origin, patients underwent a simple NTL; if it was pyriform, a minor modification called near-total laryngopharyngectomy (NTLP) was used.

Dysphagia After Total Laryngectomy

Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, 1988
Quantitative analysis of swallowing after total laryngectomy has been compared with the data obtained in normal subjects. Lack of negative pressure production in the PE segment has been related to the dysphagia and prolonged bolus transit times. High pressures in the oropharynx may be a cause of fistulas.

Total glossectomy without laryngectomy

When cancer of the tongue reaches a large size (T3, T4) it is almost impossible to treat it successfully with radiotherapy. The only therapeutic possibility in such cases is, therefore, total glossectomy. This may be effected without laryngectomy and with immediate reconstruction using musculo-cutaneous flaps.

Entering the pharynx in total laryngectomy

The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 1987
AbstractIn performing total laryngectomy for carcinoma of the larynx, the pharynx should be entered at sites away from the tumour. When the tumour is supraglottic in location, the entry should be through the lateral pharyngeal wall; and when the tumour is located in the postcricoid area, entry above the hyoid bone is preferred.

Total laryngectomy with tracheoesophageal conduit

Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, 2002
Tracheoesophageal puncture has made high-quality voice restoration readily available to most individuals who must undergo TL. Although none of these patients would voluntarily choose to undergo TL if not faced with a life-threatening condition, at least some achieve a better quality of life, including better vocal function, after treatment and ...
