Total wrist prostheses appeared relatively late in the history of articular prostheses, mainly because arthrodesis is a reliable procedure for the treatment of advanced painful destruction of the wrist. However, for the management of rheumatoid arthritis, in which both wrists are commonly involved, arthroplasty is becoming increasingly popular.

Advances in Total Wrist Arthroplasty
2016Total wrist fusion (TWF) is still the standard in the treatment of advanced rheumatoid wrist destruction. TWF is a well-established and reliable method, but the position of fusion is not always optimal and difficulties in performing ADL have been reported.

The Journal of Arthroplasty, 1988
Thirty-two patients underwent 38 arthroplasties for advanced rheumatoid arthritis and marked soft tissue losses. Seven wrists required repair or transfer of at least one tendon for rebalancing. All patients were improved by the implants. Thirty-four of the 38 patients were improved beyond the functional level of a painless wrist arthrodesis.

Total Wrist Arthroplasty; Experience With a Noncemented Wrist Prosthesis
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1997Experience with an improved total wrist prosthesis developed in 1986 is reported. It could be shown that a solid osseointegration of the prosthesis can be achieved without use of cement. The most important prerequisite is to place the prosthetic components correctly into solid bone stock. Ten revisions were necessary, most directly related to technical
