Totally Geodesic Submanifolds of Riemannian Symmetric Spaces
2014The index of a Riemannian manifold is defined as the minimal codimension of a totally geodesic submanifold. In this note we discuss two recent results by the author and Olmos (Berndt and Olmos, On the index of symmetric spaces, preprint, arXiv:1401.3585) and some related topics.

Symmetry properties for submanifolds and totally geodesic maps
1997A submanifold \(M\) of an Euclidean space is \(2\)-symmetric if for each \(x\in M\) there exists an involutory isometry \(s_x\) of the ambient space, with fixed point \(x\) isolated on \(M\) and mapping locally \(M\) onto itself. All totally geodesic submanifolds of a symmetric submanifold of an Euclidean space are \(2\)-symmetric.
