3D printing of biomimetic composites with improved fracture toughness

open access: yesActa Materialia, 2019
Recent researches show that material microstructural designs mimicking biomaterials offer an effective way to produce tougher composites. To reveal the underlying microstructure-toughness relationship, five bioinspired material microstructures are ...

The effect of thermal cycling on the fracture toughness of metallic glasses

open access: yes, 2020
A wide range of behaviors, including non-monotonic rejuvenation and relaxation, and the ability to qualitatively change the effect by varying the structural state of the glass was observed during thermal cycling of bulk metallic glasses.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Phase Structure, Compatibility, and Toughness of PLA/PCL Blends: A Review

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2019
Results of the studies dealing with the toughness of polylactic acid/polycaprolactone (PLA/PCL) blends are analyzed with respect to the PCL particle size, PLA matrix crystallinity, and presence of a compatibilizer.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Properties of E-51/DDS Epoxy Resin Toughened by Alkaline EPb-POSS

open access: yesCailiao gongcheng, 2016
The bisphenol A epoxy resin (E-51)/4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) was modified by the epoxy silsesquioxane (EPb-POSS), which was synthesized by hydrolytic condensation of (γ-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane under basic condition, to prepare EPb-POSS ...

Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

High-temperature toughening in ternary medium-entropy (Ta1/3Ti1/3Zr1/3)C carbide consolidated using spark-plasma sintering

open access: yesJournal of Asian Ceramic Societies, 2020
We report for the first time the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of (Ta1/3Ti1/3Zr1/3)C carbide. Flexural strength and fracture toughness were investigated using the three-point bending technique in argon.

Hydrogen‐Assisted Fracture of Iron‐Based Fe–Ni–Al Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Principal relations and fracture mechanisms of single‐phase and precipitate‐strengthened Fe–Ni–Al alloys subjected to prior electrochemical hydrogen charging are identified. The mechanisms of hydrogen effect on strength and microhardness are discussed, including hydrogen‐induced increase in microhardness and the role of hydrogen in fracture behavior ...
