Annals of Tourism Research, 1997Abstract Guides to tourism planning typically lack a language for dealing with the destination's experiential content. This article argues that tourism planning has as its central challenge the design of effective touristic experiences, and can find conceptual sources for this task in iconography, the field that studies the meanings of images.

This research examines the overall visitor experience of a dark tourism site visit – the April 3rd Peace Park on Jeju Island, Korea. It employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches to examine visitors’ motivation, on-site experience, and their satisfaction from their visit to the Peace Memorial Hall.
