Toxic megacolon, its incidence, differential diagnosis, and presenting signs and symptoms are reviewed in this article. The typical histologic and radiographic features are described with a review of the potential triggering factors. An outline of requirements for adequate monitoring of the patient with toxic megacolon is provided.
