Adequate techniques for the resection and dependable reconstruction of the trachea have only been developed in the last 15 years. The relative rarity of tracheal lesions, despite the relatively massive explosion of postintubation lesions, has allowed only a few individuals and a few centers to develop any significant experience in depth.

Tracheal burns caused by thermal or chemical injuries are uncommon, but they can be difficult to manage. A high index of suspicion is required for early detection of these injuries. Acutely, they are often life threatening unless they are diagnosed quickly and managed properly.

A patient is described who presented with stenosis of the upper trachea causing respiratory distress. There was no evidence of tuberculosis elsewhere in the body but biopsy showed a granulomatous lesion and there was a good response to anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy. A temporary tracheostomy was needed.

Neurilemomas of the tracheobronchial tree are exceedingly rare. In this article we report what is, to our knowledge, the 12th case--the third such case of tracheal origin. Clinical features are referable to airway obstruction and local pressure effects. The gross appearance is of an encapsulated lesion.
