Tracheal stenosis is a rare, potentially life-threatening condition described as innate narrowing of the tracheal lumen. The causes of tracheal stenosis vary widely. The most common forms result from prolonged intubation, although congenital causes usually involve complete tracheal rings or compression from cardiovascular malformations.

Tracheal growth in congenital tracheal stenosis
Pediatric Radiology, 1996Two cases of congenital tracheal stenosis were managed conservatively despite mild to moderate initial respiratory symptomatology in infancy. Serial CT examinations were performed on each child, with tracheal dimensions and cross-sectional areas measured in the region of stenosis at each CT examination.

Stridor and respiratory difficulty are fairly common complaints in the neonatal period and during early infancy. Accurate diagnosis can often be made by radiological investigation. There are numerous causes, of which one of the rarest is a congenital tracheal stenosis. Two instances of this abnormality are described below.

Tracheal stenosis is a narrowing or constriction of the airway which results in abnormal airflow. Patients will normally present with complaints of dyspnea. There can be congenital or acquired pathology leading to tracheal stenosis, but the most common cause is iatrogenic. A through history is important to obtain in order to make the correct diagnosis.

Post-intubation tracheal stenosis
Hospital Medicine, 2000A42-year-old insulin-dependent diabetic woman was admitted in the intensive care unit with aspiration pneumonia following an episode of hypoglycaemia. She was managed by mechanical ventilation with endotracheal intubation. During her stay she had a pulmonary embolism for which she was heparinized. Myocardial infarction further delayed her weaning from

While still an uncommon cause of airway obstruction, the incidence of tracheal stenosis in adults has increased with the use of assisted ventilation. The etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of tracheal stenosis are discussed. Special attention is paid to post-intubation tracheal stenosis and to tracheal resection as its most successful treatment option.

Tracheal stenosis following assisted ventilation is becoming recognized as a major complication of tracheostomy, and the use of cuffed tracheostomy tubes. The possible causes and surgical management of this condition are discussed together with recommendations to minimize the possibility of post-tracheostomy tracheal stenosis.
