Treatment of Malignant Tracheoesophageal Fistula

This article addresses the treatment of malignant enterorespiratory fistulas, especially malignant tracheoesophageal fistula (mTEF). mTEF typically occurs after radiochemotherapy for advanced esophageal cancer. Life expectancy is measured in months after successful treatment, and in days to weeks with a persistent fistula.

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) in the neonate is a complex congenital disorder that may occur in isolation or as part of a larger association of findings (i.e., VACTERL association). Care of these patients must include testing to clarify the anatomic and physiologic characteristics of each finding.
