A comparative study of populations of Ectopleura crocea and Ectopleura ralphi (Hydrozoa, Tubulariidae) from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Ectopleura crocea (L. Agassiz, 1862) and Ectopleura ralphi (Bale, 1884) are two of the nominal tubulariid species re-corded for the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWAO), presumably with wide but disjunct geographical ranges and similar morphologies.

Two Species of Koellikerina Medusae (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa, Anthomedusae) from Japan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We fully described two Koellikerina species from shallow waters in Japan with illustrations and photographs. Koellikerina constricta (Menon, 1932), bearing characteristic bell constriction, expands its distribution to Kuchinoerabu Island, Kagoshima ...

Pelagic Cnidaria and Ctenophora diversity patterns and trends in Macaronesia insular systems (NE Atlantic) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Jellyfish are important components of the marine ecosystem and present a potential resource for different economic domains (e.g. medicine, food and biotechnology).

Voragonema tatsunoko (Trachymedusae: Rhopalonematidae), a new species of benthopelagic medusa, host to the hyperiid amphipod Mimonectes spandli (Physosomata: Mimonectidae)

open access: yesZootaxa, 2010
Large numbers of a distinctive trachymedusa were observed at 1967 m depth just above the bottom in Suruga Bay, Japan, during a dive by the crewed submersible Shinkai 2000 in April 2002. Two individuals were collected and proved to be an undescribed species, herein described as Voragonema tatsunoko sp. nov. This species is characterised by the number (9)

Seismic Disturbance, Productivity and Depth Shape Hadal Benthic Habitats and Biodiversity in the Japan, Ryukyu and Izu‐Ogasawara Trenches (Northwest Pacific Ocean)

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim This study characterises benthic habitats and associated biodiversity in three Japanese subduction trenches, and explores the effects of trench‐specific differences in large‐scale seismic events, disturbance and productivity regimes on habitat structure and assemblage composition.

Review of Eastern Adriatic Hydromedusae: Unravelling Two Centuries of Records

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The Eastern Adriatic Sea is biogeographically complex, yet knowledge of its hydromedusae is fragmented across two centuries of uneven sampling and shifting taxonomy.

The Hydrozoa: a new classification in the light of old knowledge [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The Hydrozoa, on the basis of embryological, developmental and morphological features, are considered as a superclass of the phylum Cnidaria comprising three classes: the Automedusa (with the subclasses: Actinulidae, Narcomedusae and Trachymedusae ...

Investigating pelagic biodiversity and gelatinous zooplankton communities in the rapidly changing European Arctic: An eDNA metabarcoding survey

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 6, Issue 3, May–June 2024.
In this study, we implement eDNA metabarcoding to investigate patterns of pelagic diversity in the European Arctic. We successfully detected a wide range of taxa belonging to the marine metazoan and gelatinous zooplankton communities. We demonstrate vertical patterns of diversity as well as relationships between taxa and water mass indicators such as ...
