Dual-stage track-following servo design for hard disk drives

Proceedings of the 1999 American Control Conference (Cat. No. 99CH36251), 1999
Discrete time, 25 KTPI track-following servos were designed for magnetic hard disk drive dual stage actuators using the /spl mu/-synthesis methodology. The design methodology was tested on two microactuator models. The first is a model of a piezoelectrically actuated suspension, under development by Hutchinson Technology Incorporated.

A Micro-Actuator for a Hard-Disk Drive Fine Tracking Servo

Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), 1998
Abstract This paper reports on the design, fabrication and testing of an electrostatic micro-actuator for a magnetic Hard-Disk Drive (HDD) tracking servo. First, the design requirements for a micro-actuator in this application were investigated.

High-Speed Tracking Control System for Broadcast-Use Optical Disk Drive

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 2005
The proposed ZPET-FF control system suppressed tracking error to less than 9 nm at high speed in the optical recording system of NA: 0.85. We confirmed the system is effective for high-data-transfer-rate optical disk drives.

Repetitive controller design for minimum track misregistration in hard disk drives

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2005
Repetitive control is a widely used technique for the compensation of repeatable error in systems that contain rotating mechanisms or repeat a trajectory. Generally, it includes delay chains and a low-pass filter in the positive feedback loop, which generate a periodic signal.

Design of a robust track-following controller for optical disk drives

IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 2004
In this paper, we design a robust track-following controller that satisfies the transient response specifications and diminishes the influence of sinusoidal disturbance. To this end, a robust control problem with the multiple constraints is considered.

A new approach for track following control of optical disk drive

Digest of the Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference, 2003
A model predictive control based minimum variance control (MVC) scheme for the track following control of DVD-ROMs is studied in this paper. An add-on signal with enough excitation is combined with the control signal coming from the DVD control chip to drive the track following servo system such that the tracking error within a certain range is ...

Access system requirement for high track per inch hard disk drives

2000 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference. Digests of APMRC2000 on Mechanical and Manufacturing Aspects of HDD (Cat. No.00EX395), 2002
This paper proposes a self-tuning controller for a dual-stage servo system to maximize the track per inch (TPI) in a hard disk drive given the actuator bandwidth limitations. The projected TPI given various access systems limitations is also presented.
