The Application of Traction Motors

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1940
The application of traction motors is based fundamentally on speed-time curve calculations. This method has been used for many years and is familiar to electrical engineers engaged primarily in transportation activities. Many other engineers infrequently encounter problems of traction-motor application but are not conversant with the effect which ...

Dynamic braking with traction motors

Electrical Engineering, 1945
Retardation with traction motors, either independently or as an adjunct to mechanical braking, has been utilized in various forms on practically all types of electric vehicles from battery trucks to main-line locomotives. In some cases, it is used only to maintain uniform speeds on long grades and in others to make regular service stops.

Multilevel invertors of traction motors

Russian Electrical Engineering, 2011
The peculiarities of using multilevel (three-level) voltage inverters for traction purposes are studied. It is shown that a three-level inverter allows one to achieve economical voltage control in traction motors which reduces losses in both devices and a traction drive in general.
