Delivering Sulfate to LNAPL Body for Enhanced Source Zone Depletion (ESZD)

open access: yesGroundwater Monitoring &Remediation, EarlyView.
Abstract This field pilot study evaluates the feasibility of applying sulfate to a light non‐aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) body for achieving enhanced source zone depletion (ESZD) at a refinery site. Two rounds of gypsum land application (GLA) delivered sulfate to an 8000 ft2 area encompassing LNAPL‐containing monitoring wells MW‐2 and MW‐3, while MW‐1 ...

The influence of cutting height on arthropods in farm grassland

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Mowing at a cutting height of 13 cm slightly reduced the immediate negative impact of mowing compared to mowing at a height of 7 cm. Medium‐term effects overrode this benefit: the number of vegetation‐dwelling arthropods remained strongly reduced two and four weeks after mowing, regardless of the cutting height.

Intrastate Truck Driver Pay and Safety: A Longitudinal Analysis

open access: yesIndustrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Truck drivers, their employers, and the public bear the costs of large truck crashes. Prior research finds that truck drivers tend to have fewer crashes when they are paid more, yet much of the U.S. industry operates with low pay and high turnover.

Challenges to artificial intelligence‐enabled digital technology adoption in farms: a multi‐method approach

open access: yesInternational Transactions in Operational Research, EarlyView.
Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI)‐enabled digital technologies have the potential to transform agriculture by supporting decision‐making and automating operations. However, their limited adoptions and scholars’ atheoretical explorations constrain our understanding.

Mathematical Modeling and Mechanism of Coarsening of Austenitic Grain at High-Temperature Heating of Alloyed Structural Steels

open access: yesМеханика машин, механизмов и материалов, 2019
The influence of the heating rate of typical cemented steels 15KhGN2TA and 25KhGT on the growth of austenitic grain at long isothermal exposures in the process of high-temperature chemical-thermal treatment is studied.

Disc Mower Modifications to Reduce Suction Effects Do Not Decrease Insect Losses During Grassland Mowing

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Among other anthropogenic factors, intensive agriculture, including frequent mowing, has largely contributed to the decline of the grassland fauna in Central Europe. Disc mowers, the predominant mowing technology, have long been suspected to cause high arthropod mortality mainly through suction generated by slanted blades.

Hydromulches in Organic Strawberry Production: Effects on Densities of Insect Pests and Natural Enemies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Liquid‐sprayable cellulose hydromulches (HM) are alternatives to plastic polyethylene (PE) mulches for weed suppression in organic agriculture. However, their impact on arthropod pests and natural enemies remains unexplored. Various HMs made of shredded newsprint, water and guar gum were compared against white‐on‐black PE mulch, paper sheet ...

Fixing Rice Stubble Burning for Delhi's Air: Technological Solutionism and Agrarian Governance in Haryana

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Every winter, Delhi's polluted air draws national attention to the burning of rice stubble in neighbouring states. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Haryana in north India, this article shows how bureaucrats and scientists attempt to enact certainty around technological solutions to stubble burning even while privately acknowledging their ...
