A theory of nonequilibrium traffic flow

Transportation Research Part B: Methodological, 1998
This paper presents a new continuum traffic flow theory. The derivation of this new theory is based on both empirical evidence of traffic flow behavior and basic assumptions on drivers' reaction to stimuli. Central to the development of this theory is the existence of an equilibrium speed-concentration relationship and an introduction of a disturbance ...

Traffic flow theory

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1968
The traffic theorist of today has an ever-increasing capacity to bring a wide range of technical skills to bear on the pressing problems of traffic congestion, delays, and accidents with their ensuing economic and personal costs. These problems are very complex, but well-defined aspects of them can be dealt with theoretically in explicit mathematical ...

Traffic Flow Theory

1999
This chapter presents the basic traffic flow theory which is used in the following chapters for control problem formulations. The theory develops the Lighthill–Whitham–Richards (LWR) model that uses the conservation law for traffic. Additionally, a density-dependent speed formula is used.
