An Overview of Gillnet and Trammel Net Size Selectivity in the Turkish Inland Fisheries

open access: yesAquatic Sciences and Engineering
This study compiled and remodelled length selectivity studies carried out on fish caught with gill nets and trammel nets in the inland fishery in Türkiye and evaluated them based on both the initial reproduction length and minimum landing size of species.

First record of Selene dorsalis (Osteichthyes : Carangidae) in the Mediterranean Sea, from coastal waters off the Maltese Islands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The first Mediterranean record of the African moonfish, Selene dorsalis, is reported, with the capture of a single female specimen by means of a trammel net from coastal waters off the Maltese Islands.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Development of smart electronic observation onboard technologies for more sustainable fisheries management

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Long-term conservation of marine resources depends on the availability of data to adequately assess fish stocks, the environmental state and the impact of fishing activity on marine ecosystems.

Fishing gear experiments in Finland [PDF]

open access: yes, 1981
A comparison of some different European methods of estimating the numbers of fish in a lake using different fishing gear is described. The different gears used were 1. surface trawl used by night 2. bottom trawl used by day 3.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
