Liposomal Nanoconfinement Enables Type I Photodynamic Conversion for Synergistic Cancer Photothermal‐Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Liposomal nanoconfinement converts the hemicyanine photosensitizer RhM from Type‐II to Type‐I photodynamic therapy (PDT) while enhancing photothermal therapy (PTT). The RhM‐R837@Lip nanoassembly efficiently generates superoxide (O2•−) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) to kill tumor cells and achieve tumor ablation.

Self-Transcendence Correlates with Brain Function Impairment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
A broad pattern of correlations between mechanisms of brain function impairment and self-transcendence is shown. The pattern includes such mechanisms as cerebral hypoxia, physiological stress, transcranial magnetic stimulation, trance-induced ...

Activated Platelet–Released Heat Shock Protein 90α Triggers Autophagy‐Dependent Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation and Amplifies Sepsis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
HSP90α is significantly upregulated in platelets from sepsis patients, with its origin from megakaryocyte‐derived trafficking. Furthermore, activated platelets secrete HSP90α into the extracellular space in both free and exosome‐associated forms. Finally, extracellular HSP90α directly engages TLR4 on neutrophils to induce autophagy, leading to NET ...

EEG Responses to Shamanic Drumming : Does the Suggestion of Trance State Moderate the Strength of Frequency Components?

open access: yes, 2018
One of the techniques used to induce trance state in shamanic ceremonies is monotonous drumming. According to previous EEG research, certain patterns of drumming cause an increase in power of alpha ...

Deformation Driven Suction Cups: A Mechanics‐Based Approach to Wearable Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Deformation‐driven suction cups enable robust, reversible adhesion of wearable electronics to human skin spanning wide mechanical compliance, without adhesives or tight straps. By integrating mechanics modeling, experiments, and contact mechanics theory, this work reveals how cup geometry, substrate compliance, and interfacial adhesion govern suction ...

ANTISTRUCTURE AND THE ROOTS OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE

open access: yesZygon, 2020
The cognitive and evolutionary sciences of religion offer a standard model of religious representations, but no equivalent paradigm for investigating religiously interpreted altered states of consciousness (religious ASCs).

Adult Sex Ratio as a Demographic Feedback Linking Mating Systems, Parental Care, and Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Breeding systems are some of the most diverse social behavior, and our team is investigation the evolutionary causes of this diversity. This review summarises our research carried out at the University of Bath. We argue that demographic components of wild populations, especially the adult sex ratio, plays a key role driving breeding system variation ...
