ON THE BITUMINOSITY OF MESOZOIC SEDIMENTS IN THE TRANSBAIKAL REGION

The lithologic and stratigraphic relationships of Jurassic and Cretaceous basins of the Transbaikal region are described. Most are fresh-water deposits. Bituminous paper shales and brown coal are significant features of the Lower Cretaceous sequence. Studies made of the bituminous constituents indicate deposition under reducing conditions.

Terranes and Accretionary History of the Transbaikal Orogenic Belts

The Transbaikal orogenic belts are located in southern Siberia, in the Lake Baikal area. They include the Baikal-Patom fold-and-thrust belt, together with the Siberian platform forming the North Asian craton, and a collage of terranes to the south of the belt that were accreted to the craton in Late Riphean and Early to Late Paleozoic times.

Boron in soils and plants of the West Transbaikal region

Some particularities of the distribution of boron in the main types of soils were studied. A close dependency between the boron content in the soils and its concentration in the soil-forming rocks (r = 0.85) was established, as well as the absence of a correlation between the content of boron and that of humus.

Alien species of Lake Kenon (Transbaikal Region)

The article reviews invasive species of Lake Kenon, which is used as a cooling pond of the Chita TPP-1. During the period from 1919 to 2011, 11 alien species of hydrobionts were discovered in the lake. In 2009, Gnathopogon mantschuricus and the hydrophytic Elodea canadensis Mich. were registered for the first time.

Mercury in humus horizons of soils in the Transbaikal region

The total mercury content has been determined in gray forest soils, chernozems, chestnut soils, and in different parent materials in the Transbaikal region. The mercury content is below the clarke value in the intrusive, effusive, and alluvial soil-forming rocks (0.004–0.024 mg/kg).
