Fluid dynamics of aortic root dilation in Marfan syndrome [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanics, 47, (2014) 3120-3128, 2014
Aortic root dilation and propensity to dissection are typical manifestations of the Marfan Syndrome (MS), a genetic defect leading to the degeneration of the elastic fibres. Dilation affects the structure of the flow and, in turn, altered flow may play a role in vessel dilation, generation of aneurysms, and dissection.

Early use of non‐vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants after cardiac surgery compared with warfarin for postoperative atrial fibrillation

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
With the increasing use of NOAC and the availability of reversal agents, there remains sparse evidence regarding its use in POAF. The use of a NOAC in patients with POAF did not appear to increase short‐term postoperative complications, including bleeding, stroke, readmission rates and mortality, compared with warfarin.

Multimodal Prescriptive Deep Learning [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
We introduce a multimodal deep learning framework, Prescriptive Neural Networks (PNNs), that combines ideas from optimization and machine learning, and is, to the best of our knowledge, the first prescriptive method to handle multimodal data. The PNN is a feedforward neural network trained on embeddings to output an outcome-optimizing prescription.

3D Printing-Assisted Energy Loss Testing of Artificial Aortic Heart Valves [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
With the development of additive manufacturing, 3D printing technology has become more common nowadays. We designed and 3D printed a cost-effective liquid fluid pressure measurement device that can convert liquid pressure to air pressure. Air pressure was measured by a low-cost manometer in this study.

Impact of Frailty in Patients With Continuous‐Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Therapy in End‐Stage Heart Failure: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Frailty significantly impacts clinical outcomes in LVAD recipients. This systematic review and meta‐analysis reveal that frail patients experience higher long‐term mortality but comparable short‐term mortality, hospital stay, and complication rates to non‐frail patients.

The International TrifectaTM and EpicTM Valve‐in‐Valve Registry: Insights Into Clinical & Hemodynamic Outcomes

open access: yesCatheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, Volume 105, Issue 7, Page 1711-1718, June 1, 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Little is known about the clinical and hemodynamic outcome of valve‐in‐valve transcatheter aortic valve replacement (ViV‐TAVR) for failed Trifecta surgical aortic bioprotheses. Aims We aimed to compare outcomes of valve‐in‐valve transcatheter aortic valve replacement (ViV‐TAVR into failed TrifectaTM vs.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation with SAPIEN 3 versus surgical aortic valve replacement in patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis at low risk of surgical mortality: a cost-utility analysis for Switzerland

open access: yesSwiss Medical Weekly
AIMS OF THE STUDY: The 2021 European Society of Cardiology Guidelines on valvular heart disease recommend transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis at low surgical risk and age ≥75 years who are ...

Transcatheter Closure of Left Ventricular Outflow Tract–to–Left Atrium Fistula

open access: yesJACC: Case Reports, 2021
Surgical and rarely transcatheter aortic valve replacement can be complicated by intracardiac fistula. Transcatheter closure of those shunts has been previously reported with favorable results.
