Piecewise uniform optimal design of a bar with an attached mass
We minimize, with respect to the cross sectional area, the mass of a bar given the rate of heat transfer. The bar enhances the heat transfer surface of a larger known mass to which the bar is attached.

M. E. Grant Duff, Philosophic Liberalism and the Global Liberal Cause
Abstract Historians disagree about how best to conceptualize nineteenth‐century British Liberalism in relation to its international contexts. This article argues that we can better understand the patterns involved by interrogating individuals who bridged the worlds of partisan politics and elaborated thought.

O NÚMERO 𝛑 E A QUADRATURA DO CÍRCULO
- Long ago, around 4000 BC , there was already the number π , but not as we know it today. It is noteworthy that the first mathematician to use the number "pi" as the Greek letter π was the French mathematician Leonhard Euler ( 1707-1783 ) . As old as

On the analytical solution of some families of transcendental equations
AbstractThe problem of finding the exact analytical closed-form solution of some families of transcendental equations is studied, in some detail, by the Special Trans Function Theory (STFT). The mathematical genesis of the analytical closed-form solution is presented, and the structure of the theoretical derivation, proofs and numerical results confirm

Understanding place attachment to remote environments: An Antarctic case study
Abstract The Anthropocene presents unique challenges for humanity’s relationship with remote environments. Transboundary environmental problems, such as climate change or plastics pollution, affect places that are beyond most people’s direct experience.

Cross‐ply bending equation and application for compressed rod with crack
The aim of this paper is the analysis of rod cross‐ply bending and stability of rod systems in the presence of cracks. The power concept (its theoretical base is Maxwell's theorem about the reciprocity of displacements) and linear fracture mechanics ...

Faith, gender and financial investment: Providence and Presbyterianism in Scotland and abroad
Abstract Mid‐nineteenth century fictional representations of misdirected investment by widows and clergy position them as ignorant in financial matters and hence pitiable. While scholars have recognised female agency in nineteenth century commerce, insufficient attention has been paid to religious belief in financial decision‐making.

A Predator-Prey Model with Functional Response and Stage Structure for Prey
A predator-prey system with Holling type II functional response and stage structure for prey is presented. The local and global stability are studied by analyzing the associated characteristic transcendental equation and using comparison theorem.

Using synthetic farm data to estimate individual nitrate leaching levels
Abstract This article delineates a synthetic population generation scheme in an attempt to estimate individual nitrate leaching rates among Greek farms in the region of Thessaly. The proposed scheme relies upon the construction of a Bayesian network describing farming activities in the region, which, coupled with the use of nonparametric regression ...
