Faith, gender and financial investment: Providence and Presbyterianism in Scotland and abroad

open access: yesAsia‐Pacific Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract Mid‐nineteenth century fictional representations of misdirected investment by widows and clergy position them as ignorant in financial matters and hence pitiable. While scholars have recognised female agency in nineteenth century commerce, insufficient attention has been paid to religious belief in financial decision‐making.

Hopf bifurcation and stability analysis for a delayed logistic equation with additive Allee effect [PDF]

open access: yesComputational Ecology and Software, 2015
In this paper the linear stability of the delayed logistic equation with additive Allee effect is investigated. We also analyze the associated characteristic transcendental equation, to show the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation at the positive equilibrium.

A Note on the Discrete Spectrum of Gaussian Wells (I): The Ground State Energy in One Dimension

open access: yesAdvances in Mathematical Physics, 2016
The ground state energy E0(λ) of Hλ=-d2/dx2-λe-x2 is computed for small values of λ by means of an approximation of an integral operator in momentum space. Such an approximation leads to a transcendental equation for which ϵ0(λ)=|E0(λ)|1/2 is the root.

Imaginative Synthesis and the Basic Function of the Second Part of Kant's Transcendental Deduction in B

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.
Abstract Most recent commentators on Kant's Transcendental Deduction assume that the main purpose of the second part of the B‐Deduction (“BD2”) is to show that human intuitions must fall under categories for reasons connected with their spatio‐temporal form.

Piecewise uniform optimal design of a bar with an attached mass

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2015
We minimize, with respect to the cross sectional area, the mass of a bar given the rate of heat transfer. The bar enhances the heat transfer surface of a larger known mass to which the bar is attached.

Dyadic Torsion of Elliptic Curves [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$, and let $\alpha_{1}$, $\alpha_{2}$, and $\alpha_{3}$ be algebraically independent and transcendental over $k$.

Being Wrong About Personal Transformation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.
Abstract Transformative experiences are thought to change us in different ways. Some transform us epistemically by providing genuinely new, previously unimaginable experiences, while others bring about personal transformation by altering our values. Recent debates on transformative experiences have explored the challenges these experiences pose for ...

O NÚMERO 𝛑 E A QUADRATURA DO CÍRCULO

open access: yesColloquium Exactarum, 2015
- Long ago, around 4000 BC , there was already the number π , but not as we know it today. It is noteworthy that the first mathematician to use the number "pi" as the Greek letter π was the French mathematician Leonhard Euler ( 1707-1783 ) . As old as
