Study protocol for identifying resting brain functional connectivity markers of response to continuous Theta Burst Stimulation and cathodal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in patients with schizophrenia with persistent auditory hallucinations [version 2; peer review: 2 approved, 1 approved with reservations]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
Background Schizophrenia is one of the most burdensome psychiatric disorders. Novel neuromodulatory techniques including cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (c-tDCS) and continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) using repetitive transcranial

Pharmacological and Mechanistic Interventions for Cognitive Impairment Associated With Schizophrenia: A Review of Registered Clinical Trials

open access: yesActa Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Volume 153, Issue 5, Page 402-431, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Schizophrenia is characterized by positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms. Current pharmacological treatments often fail to address cognitive deficits. In this review of clinical trials, we aim to identify studies that explore neurobiological (non‐psychological) strategies to address Cognitive Impairment Associated with ...

Comparison of the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation and transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation on the urgency and frequency of women with overactive bladder syndrome: study protocol of a randomized clinical trial

open access: yesTrials
Background Overactive bladder syndrome is common, with a prevalence of 12–17% among adults. Posterior tibial nerve stimulation is the primary nonpharmacological and conservative treatment for overactive bladder syndrome. While several human brain imaging

Predicting Response to Pro‐Cognitive Interventions in Mood Disorders: A Systematic Review by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders Targeting Cognition Task Force

open access: yesActa Psychiatrica Scandinavica, Volume 153, Issue 5, Page 374-401, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are often associated with persistent cognitive deficits that impair psychosocial functioning. While pro‐cognitive interventions show promise, trial findings are inconsistent, potentially due to baseline factors influencing treatment response.

The safety and feasibility of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with conservative treatment for patients with cervicogenic headaches: A double-blinded randomized control study protocol

open access: yesContemporary Clinical Trials Communications
Background: Cervicogenic headaches (CGH) are common following concussion and whiplash injuries and significantly reduce patient quality of life. Conservative therapies such as ET (ET) and physiotherapy combined with injection-based therapies are ...

rTMS Suppresses Tobacco Craving via Enhanced Prefronto‐Striato‐Thalamic Connectivity

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 31, Issue 5, May 2026.
This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of rTMS on tobacco use disorder (TUD). The findings demonstrated that participants with TUD exhibited reduced cigarette cravings following treatment, accompanied by a reorganization of the prefrontal–striatal pathway and enhanced top‐down cognitive control.

Anti‐inflammatory effects of physical stimuli: The central role of networks in shaping the future of pharmacological research

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 10, Page 2177-2196, May 2026.
Addressing complexity in the study of life sciences through Systems Biology and Systems Medicine has been transformative, making Systems Pharmacology the next logical step. In this review, we focus on physical stimuli, whose potential in pharmacology has been neglected, despite demonstrated therapeutic properties.

A Verification Report of Three Meta‐Analyses in Transcranial Direct‐Current Stimulation—Motor Learning Research

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 63, Issue 9, May 2026.
Out of the 47 primary effect sizes across the three meta‐analyses verified, 16 could be successfully reproduced or approximated. Thirteen effect sizes, not depicted here, could not be reproduced due to missing information. ABSTRACT With transcranial direct‐current stimulation's (tDCS) popularity both in motor learning research and as a commercial ...

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the motor cortex in the treatment of chronic non-specific low back pain. A randomised, double-blind exploratory study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This exploratory study aimed to test the proof of principle that active anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the motor cortex reduces pain significantly more than sham stimulation in a group of participants with chronic non ...
