Metabolic Syndrome and Dementia Risk in Older Adults: A Narrative Review

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Dementia is a major global health issue in aging societies. Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of metabolic abnormalities, has been proposed as a modifiable risk factor for dementia, although existing evidence remains inconsistent. This review examined recent studies on the association between MetS and dementia risk in older adults.

Whole‐Brain Cerebral Microvascular Pulsatility Imaging Using Dynamic pCASL MRI With Segmented Stack‐of‐Stars Golden‐Angle Radial Acquisition

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose To develop an efficient dynamic pseudo‐continuous arterial spin labeling (pCASL) MRI technique for whole‐brain microvascular flow pulsatility imaging. Methods The proposed technique combines pCASL with a segmented stack‐of‐stars golden‐angle radial acquisition.

Interleukin-10 haplotypes are not associated with acute cerebral ischemia or high-risk transcranial Doppler in a newborn cohort of 395 children with sickle cell anemia

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia
Background: The etiology of stroke, a severe complication of sickle cell anemia, involves inflammatory processes. However, the pathogenetic mechanisms are unknown.

AI‐Based Automated Instrument Tracking During Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery: A Pilot Feasibility Study

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Endoscopic endonasal approaches (EEA) to skull base tumors are a technically challenging procedure for both surgeons and trainees. Artificial intelligence and computer vision (CV) may offer an objective analysis that provides surgical assessment on technique and enhanced educational feedback for surgeons of all levels.

Análise da capacidade reactiva da circulação intracerebral pelo efeito do CO2. Um método de fácil execução.

open access: yesActa Médica Portuguesa, 1998
Maintenance of cerebral perfusion pressure is a prerequisite for the prevention of cerebral ischaemia. Physiological fluctuations in systemic perfusion pressure are compensated by cerebrovascular autoregulation.

Mechanisms of Cough Syncope as Evaluated by the Valsalva Maneuver

open access: yesKaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, 2007
Transcranial Doppler is often employed for the assessment of cerebral hemodynamics. The study by Chao et al in the February 2007 issue of the journal raises some important issues regarding the understanding of the mechanisms involved in cough syncope. We

Identification of predictive factors for reversal of cerebral vasculopathy in an original longitudinal cohort study in newborns with sickle cell anaemia

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Cerebral macrovasculopathy (CV) is a major complication in children with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) and usually requires a long‐term transfusion programme (TP) to prevent stroke. This study aimed to identify factors predicting reversal of CV on TP in a single‐centre newborn cohort. Among 375 patients, 50 presented CV and received TP.

Ischaemic stroke and 5‐fluorouracil or capecitabine: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of harms and a retrospective study of the WHO pharmacovigilance database

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Aim Fluoropyrimidines, including 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) and capecitabine, are cornerstone antineoplastic agents for cancer. Case reports suggest that these drugs may be associated with an under‐recognised risk of ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA).
