Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound

2017
The purpose of perioperative and critical care transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonographic monitoring is to assess cerebral perfusion change. This is accomplished through noninvasive continuous measurement of blood flow-velocity within the largest intracranial blood vessels.

[Transcranial Doppler ultrasound].

Canadian Association of Radiologists journal = Journal l'Association canadienne des radiologistes, 1992
Over the last decade, transcranial Doppler examination of the cerebral vessels has been made possible by the development of a high-intensity, low-frequency (2 MHz) pulse probe. The middle, the anterior and the posterior cerebral arteries, the cavernous portion of the carotid artery and the basilar artery can thus be easily studied transtemporally or ...

Detection of Microembolic Signals with Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound

2006
Detection of microembolic signals (MES) with transcranial Doppler was introduced in the late 1980s; several animal and in vitro models reported a high sensitivity and specificity with this technique. Monitoring for MES in various patient groups has provided valuable insights on stroke pathophysiology, although its clinical value remains a matter of ...

Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound in Children with Sturge-Weber Syndrome

Journal of Child Neurology, 2007
Transcranial Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive vascular assessment technique proved useful in the management of pediatric disorders predisposed to stroke and may have similar utility for Sturge-Weber syndrome. Eight children with Sturge-Weber syndrome had velocities measured in the major cerebral arteries via the Stroke Prevention Trial in Sickle ...

Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound: Physical Principles

2021
This chapter describes the physical principles underlying transcranial Doppler ultrasound. The propagation of ultrasound through tissue is described. The principles of continuous wave Doppler, pulsed wave Doppler, duplex scanning, colour flow imaging and power Doppler imaging are introduced.

Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound and Neurophysiology

2016
Abstract Neurologists who care for patients with a critical neurologic illness commonly order and interpret neuroimaging studies, particularly computed tomography (CT) angiograms and CT perfusion, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and cerebral angiography.

Evaluation of cerebral AVM's using transcranial Doppler ultrasound

Journal of Neurosurgery, 1986
✓Blood flow velocities in basal cerebral arteries were recorded noninvasively in 28 patients with cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM's) and were correlated with the angiographic findings. In normal arteries remote from the AVM, flow velocities ranged from 44 to 94 cm/sec (median 65 cm/sec) with pulsatility indexes from 0.65 to 1.10 (median 0.87).

Validation of transcranial Doppler ultrasound with a stereotactic neurosurgical technique

Journal of Neurosurgery, 1995
✓ Vessel identification during a transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound examination is usually based on well-established inferential criteria without confirmation by imaging. Part of a routine study involves taking measurements from the M1 segment of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) at the points ...

A New Method for Fixation of Probes for Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound

Journal of Neuroimaging, 1997
Although monitoring of blood velocity in the cerebral arteries with transcranial Doppler ultrasound is standard practice, methods for fixation of the ultrasound probe to the skull continue to impose a technical challenge. This report describes a novel method of probe fixation in which an inexpensive polymer block is custom–made for each patient to hold

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound in children with stroke and cerebrovascular disorders

Current Opinion in Pediatrics, 2015
A major advantage of transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound is its ability to measure cerebral hemodynamics noninvasively at the patient's bedside. This article summarizes the basic physics and variables used during TCD, recent pediatric data published on the use of TCD in stroke and cerebrovascular disorders and how it may impact diagnosis and ...
