Gastrointestinal Electrical Stimulation as Prevention of Postoperative Ileus—A Blinded Randomized Controlled Porcine Trial

open access: yesNeurogastroenterology &Motility, EarlyView.
In this animal study, direct postoperative electrical stimulation of the sigmoid colon shortened the length of postoperative ileus in an animal model. ABSTRACT Introduction Postoperative ileus (POI) is a condition characterized by a transient cessation of gastrointestinal function caused by surgical trauma and represents a clinical challenge after ...

Autonomic Nervous System in Bone Remodeling: From Mechanisms to Novel Therapies in Orthopedic Diseases

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, EarlyView.
Due to the close connection between the autonomic nervous system and skeletal system, large amounts of evidence have shown that neuromodulation plays a crucial role in regulating bone metabolism. Clinically, neuromodulation has exhibited promising therapeutic effects in treating joint disorders by significantly reducing inflammation and clinical scores.

Neurocardiology: translational advancements and potential

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 603, Issue 7, Page 1729-1779, 31 March 2025.
Abstract figure legend Afferent signalling pathways of the autonomic nervous system and their efferent targets in the heart, kidneys and vasculature. Abstract In our original white paper published in the The Journal of Physiology in 2016, we set out our knowledge of the structural and functional organization of cardiac autonomic control, how it ...

Bayliss Starling Prize Lecture 2023: Neuropeptide‐Y being ‘unsympathetic’ to the broken hearted

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 603, Issue 7, Page 1841-1864, 31 March 2025.
Abstract figure legend The hallmark of cardiac disease is autonomic dysregulation, characterised by a state of chronic sympathoexcitation. Neuropeptide‐Y (NPY) is a sympathetic co‐transmitter that is released by sympathetic neurons and circulating venous levels are elevated in a range of cardiac disease, such as myocardial infarction and chronic heart ...

Firing properties of single axons with cardiac rhythmicity in the human cervical vagus nerve

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 603, Issue 7, Page 1941-1958, 31 March 2025.
Abstract figure legend The activity of single neurones was isolated from microneurographic recordings of the human cervical vagus nerve. The firing of these neurones was then cross‐correlated with the heartbeat to identify neurones that fire with a cardiac rhythm. Such neurones are of interest because the presence of cardiac rhythmicity implicates them

Towards spatially selective efferent neuromodulation: anatomical and functional organization of cardiac fibres in the porcine cervical vagus nerve

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 603, Issue 7, Page 1983-2004, 31 March 2025.
Abstract figure legend Functional, in vivo imaging was performed in pigs by means of selective vagus nerve stimulation with a multi‐electrode cuff in conjunction with physiological readouts of organ‐specific activity. These data were analysed and correlated to the electrode positions to determine the functional map. Subsequently, the pig was killed and

Computational modelling of cardiac control following myocardial infarction using an in silico patient cohort

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 603, Issue 7, Page 2021-2042, 31 March 2025.
Abstract figure legend The baroreflex adapts to compensate for the decrease in cardiac function after myocardial infarction. We used in silico patient cohorts representing afferent and efferent loci of neural adaptation to explore neural remodelling that allowed individuals to maintain higher baroreflex sensitivity after cardiac injury.

Atrioventricular conduction abnormalities are associated with poor outcome following intermittent umbilical cord occlusions in fetal sheep

open access: yesActa Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, Volume 104, Issue 6, Page 1207-1217, June 2025.
Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring of fetal sheep heart during intermittent umbilical cord occlusions gradually leading to severe metabolic acidemia revealed several fetal arrhythmias including atrioventricular block, ventricular tachycardia, and ventricular fibrillation that would have gone unnoticed with current fetal monitoring systems ...

Multi‐Spatial Voxel‐Scale Modulation of Acupuncture on Abnormal Brain Activity in Migraine Patients Without Aura: A Randomized Study Neuroimaging Trial

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 15, Issue 5, May 2025.
Acupuncture treats migraine without aura by modulating the default mode network, visual network, and sensorimotor network at different spatial voxel scales. ABSTRACT Background The role of acupuncture in treating migraine has been widely recognized, but the systematic, comprehensive and, multi‐spatial voxel‐scale mechanism of brain function changes is ...

Effect of Anesthesia and Diurnal Variation on Chronic Vagus Nerve Activity in Rats

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience Research, Volume 103, Issue 5, May 2025.
Here we report the surgical implantation of CNTY electrodes within the vagus nerve and external electrodes for common‐mode signal detection, to enable chronic recording from freely moving Sprague Dawley rats. Vagus nerve electrograms show suppressed electrical activity under isoflurane anesthesia and robust activity otherwise.
