Cardiovascular MRI: A valuable tool to detect cardiac source of emboli in cryptogenic ischemic strokes

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, 2020
Objectives Despite a thorough work‐up including transesophageal echocardiography, 20%–30% of stroke etiology remains cryptogenic. Transesophageal echocardiogram is considered the gold standard procedure to detect cardiac or aortic sources of emboli.

Transesophageal Echocardiography: Not for Everyone? [PDF]

open access: yesStroke, 2007
To the Editor: We read with interest the article by de Bruijn et al comparing transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography (TEE versus TEE) for the evaluation of TIA or stroke.1 We congratulate the investigators on this important study. TEE proved superior to TTE for identification of a cardiac embolic source in patients with TIA or …

Percutaneous Closure of Patent Foramen Ovale in a Patient With Incomplete Cor Triatriatum Sinister: A Case Report

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Ultrasound, EarlyView.
We present the case of a 55‐year‐old male who experienced a cryptogenic ischemic stroke, likely due to a patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the setting of an incomplete cor triatriatum sinister (CTS) and a 30 mm GORE Cardioform Septal Occluder was successfully implanted.

Zero‐Contrast Versus Contrast‐Guided Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion: A Comparative Analysis of Procedural and Long‐Term Outcomes

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, EarlyView.
Zero‐contrast left atrial appendage occlusion yielded high procedural success and similar periprocedural adverse event rates compared to the contrast‐guided approach. At 45‐day follow‐up, successful LAA closure (defined as peri‐device leak ≤ 5 mm) and device‐related thrombus rates were similar.

Transesophageal Echocardiographic Characteristics of Secundum-Type Atrial-Septal Defect in Adult Patients

open access: yesJournal of Tehran University Heart Center, 2009
Background: Given the dearth of data in the existing literature on the size and morphologic variability of secundum-type atrial-septal defect (ASD-II) in adult patients, we aimed to address this issue in a series of consecutive adult patients evaluated ...

Bipolar transesophageal thoracic spinal cord stimulation: A novel clinically relevant method for motor-evoked potentialsCentral MessagePerspective

open access: yesJTCVS Techniques, 2020
Objective: Although transesophageal motor-evoked potential elicited by monopolar cervical cord stimulation is more stable and rapid in response to ischemia than transcranial motor-evoked potential in canine experiments, direct cervical alpha motor neuron

Could the use of computed tomography and transesophageal echosonography decrease the number of explorative thoracotomy in the lung carcinoma? [PDF]

open access: yesVojnosanitetski Pregled, 2002
A group of 49 patients (41 males, 8 females) with locally confined non small cell lung carcinoma, of the average age 58.48 ± 9.05 years, was retrospectively analyzed. Bronchoscopy, computed tomography of the thorax and transesophageal echosonography were

Comparison of Two Pulsed Field Ablation Systems for Atrial Fibrillation: One‐Year Outcomes From a Multicenter Registry

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background While various pulsed field ablation (PFA) systems for atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation have become available in recent years, data comparing long‐term efficacy outcomes remain limited. Purpose To compare long‐term efficacy outcomes of two commercially available PFA systems to perform pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for AF in a ...

Perioperative Management for Patients With Spinal Muscular Atrophy Undergoing Scoliosis Surgery: A Single‐Center Retrospective Study

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, EarlyView.
This largest Asian case series confirms that posterior spinal fusion for SMA scoliosis is safe and effective despite severe deformity and markedly impaired pulmonary function. Meticulous multidisciplinary care, including advanced airway planning, hemodynamic support, blood management, and proactive electrolyte correction, is critical to optimizing ...
