Sharing the demographic dividend : findings from low- and middle-income countries in Asia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
For more about the East-West Center, see http://www.eastwestcenter.org/Recent work by NTA teams in Asia has shed light on how both the contributions and benefits associated with population change are shared-—among age groups, between genders, among ...

Thermal Timescale Mass Transfer Rates in Intermediate-Mass X-ray Binaries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Thermal timescale mass transfer generally occurs in close binaries where the donor star is more massive than the accreting star. The mass transfer rates are usually estimated in terms of the Kelvin-Helmholtz timescale of the donor star.

Technology Transfer: What to Transfer?

open access: yesIFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1979
Abstract In this paper, proper technology transfer is viewed as a transfer of not only production capabilities but also of methodologies and scientific understanding upon which such capabilities are based. The author discusses different forms, criteria for selection and evaluation systems, and bases for proper and sound decisions.

Anatomy transfer [PDF]

open access: yesACM Transactions on Graphics, 2013
Characters with precise internal anatomy are important in film and visual effects, as well as in medical applications. We propose the first semi-automatic method for creating anatomical structures, such as bones, muscles, viscera and fat tissues. This is done by transferring a reference anatomical model from an input template to an arbitrary target ...

Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.

VERIFICATION OF THE PHYSICAL AND MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR CALCULATION OF AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF BLUFF BODIES MOVING IN AIR AT LARGE MACH NUMBERS

open access: yesСистемный анализ и прикладная информатика, 2018
The verification results of the computer simulation model for calculation of aerodynamic characteristics of bluff bodies (cone with different apex angles and a «cone–cylinder» body) moving in air at different Mach number and zero angle of attack are ...

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Heat transfer device [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
A heat transfer device is characterized by an hermetically sealed tubular housing including a tubular shell terminating in spaced end plates, and a tubular mesh wick concentrically arranged and operatively supported within said housing.

Dimerization-assisted energy transport in light-harvesting complexes

open access: yes, 2010
We study the role of the dimer structure of light-harvesting complex II (LH2) in excitation transfer from the LH2 (without a reaction center (RC)) to the LH1 (surrounding the RC), or from the LH2 to another LH2.
