On the generative power of transformational grammars

Information Sciences, 1973
Abstract Mathematical modeling of phrase structure grammars has yielded many results of benefit to linguists in their investigation of these grammars, such as Chomsky's characterization in terms of self-embedding of those context-free languages which are not regular.

Identifiability of a Class of Transformational Grammars

1973
This paper extends a formal theory of language learning to transformational components. Learning procedures which are psychologically more suggestive than those previously studied are shown to yield positive results under formally specified conditions.

Transformational Generative Grammar: A Survey [PDF]

open access: possible, 1988
Abstract : This report is a survey of past, current, and on-going research in the field of Generative Grammars. The paper assumes no previous knowledge in the field and includes an overview of phrase structure and transformational grammars. An overview is also given of the work done by Peters and Ritchie (1973) on Formalizing Transformations and is ...

Grammar-based program transformation

Proceedings. Conference on Software Maintenance, 1988., 1988
A grammar-based technique is introduced for making sweeping changes, involving substantial restructuring, to large-scale software programs. Pervasive structural changes are often required to make changes in data structures, computational forms, or programming style during software maintenance. The concept of a grammar-based editor is introduced.

Problems of selection in transformational grammar

Journal of Linguistics, 1965
This paper is concerned with two related problems. Briefly: how can we best handle, in a transformational grammar(i) Restrictions on the collocability (Simon, 1953; Firth, 1957; Mitchell, 1958) of one word with another.
