High-Dose Tranexamic Acid in Patients Underwent Surgical Repair of Aortic Dissection Might Reduce Postoperative Blood Loss: A Cohort Analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Surgery, 2022
IntroductionWhile tranexamic acid (TXA) is widely used in patients with acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) who undergo surgical repair to reduce blood loss and transfusion requirement, the optimal dosage of TXA is unknown in these patients.Materials ...

Platelet transfusions [PDF]

open access: yesThe Lancet, 2007
Ever since platelet transfusions were shown to reduce mortality from haemorrhage in patients with acute leukaemia in the 1950s, the use of this therapy has steadily grown to become an essential part of the treatment of cancer, haematological malignancies, marrow failure, and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Microfluidic flow chambers using reconstituted blood to model hemostasis and platelet transfusion in vitro [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Blood platelets prepared for transfusion gradually lose hemostatic function during storage. Platelet function can be investigated using a variety of (indirect) in vitro experiments, but none of these is as comprehensive as microfluidic flow chambers.

How do hospitals respond to feedback about blood transfusion practice? A multiple case study investigation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
National clinical audits play key roles in improving care and driving system-wide change. However, effects of audit and feedback depend upon both reach (e.g. relevant staff receiving the feedback) and response (e.g.

Transfusion-related acute lung injury in multiple traumatized patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: Many of the multiple traumatized patients who refer to the hospital need transfusion. Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a serious clinical syndrome associated with the transfusion of plasma-containing blood components.

Blocking the voltage‐gated sodium channel hNav1.5 as a novel pH‐dependent mechanism of action for tamoxifen

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Patch‐clamp recordings revealed that tamoxifen inhibits voltage‐gated sodium channels, especially under acidic conditions, both common in metastatic cancer cells. These effects may explain certain antitumor properties of tamoxifen, highlighting a novel mechanism of action beyond its known endocrine effects.

Traumatic coagulopathy and massive transfusion: improving outcomes and saving blood

open access: yesProgramme Grants for Applied Research, 2017
Introduction: Dysfunction of the coagulation system, termed trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC), is a major problem in patients who bleed after injury. Trauma haemorrhage is considered one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide.
