Two Strategies in Transient Change Detection

The paper addresses the transient change detection (TCD) problem, assuming that the duration of change is finite. The TCD criterion minimizes the worst-case probability of missed detection among all tests with a prescribed worst-case probability of false alarm. We study the fixed sample size (FSS) test as a solution to the TCD problem.

The transient detection microscope

We describe a microscope that preferentially displays moving objects. This all-optical device operates in real-time using the nonlinear coupling of optical beams in a photorefractive crystal of barium titanate. A holographic image is continuously written and compared with the real image, and any discrepancy between the two images is immediately visible.

When one calculates a time-frequency distribution of white noise there sometimes appear transients of short duration. Superficially, these transients appear to be real signals but they are not. This comes about by random chance in the noise and also because particular types of distributions do not resolve components well in time.

Detection of transient signals by the Gabor representation

This paper proposes to use the Gabor representation for the detection of transient signals with unknown arrival times. We introduce a one-sided exponential window function, which seems to the most appropriate for transient modeling. Explicit expressions for the Gabor coefficients are given for this window function.
