Comparison of Clinical Scores for Predicting Stroke‐Associated Pneumonia After Acute Ischemic Stroke

open access: yesAGING MEDICINE, EarlyView.
Our study compared the discrimination and calibration of the Kwon Pneumonia Score, A2DS2 score, PANTHERIS score, AIS‐APS score, ISAN score, and PASS score in SAP identification; of these, the AIS‐APS score showed the best performance. ABSTRACT Objectives To compare the discrimination and calibration of six risk scoring systems in the assessment of ...

Transient Ischemic Attack Results in Delayed Brain Atrophy and Cognitive Decline

open access: yesStroke, 2018
Background and Purpose— Transient ischemic attack (TIA) initiates an ischemic cascade without resulting in frank infarction and, as such, represents a novel model to study the effects of this ischemic cascade and secondary neurodegeneration in humans ...

Correlation Between Blood Glucose Level and Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Markers in Neurologically Asymptomatic, Nondiabetic Individuals

open access: yesAGING MEDICINE, EarlyView.
The prevalence of neurologically asymptomatic CSVD is common in the nondiabetic population. Glycated hemoglobin A1c correlated with periventricular white matter hyperintensities. Fasting blood glucose was associated with deep cerebral microbleeds. Better control of blood glucose may have a beneficial effect on reducing the risk of CSVD.

Risk Factors and Predictive Model for Ischemic Complications in Endovascular Treatment of Intracranial Aneurysms: Insights From a Large Patient Cohort

open access: yesAGING MEDICINE, EarlyView.
Independent risk factors for ischemic complications in endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms were identified using machine learning methods, and the first prediction model for ischemic complications of all intracranial aneurysms was constructed. Moreover, the model showed a stable and excellent predictive efficacy.

Risk Factors Associated with Recurrent Strokes in Young and Elderly Patients: A Hospital-based Study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gerontology, 2015
Background: Recurrent stroke is often devastating, and can cause severe disability or death. Risk factors associated with recurrent strokes unrelated to atrial fibrillation have been well identified; however, it remains to be further elucidated whether ...

Functional and emotional outcomes after transient ischemic attack: A 12-month prospective controlled cohort study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Stroke, 2019
Background Symptoms of transient ischemic attack are believed to fully resolve within 24 h of onset. Emerging evidence suggests that there may be prolonged functional and psychological impact, although studies have not been able to robustly identify ...

Young Stroke Survivors With No Early Recurrence at High Long‐Term Risk of Adverse Outcomes

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2019
Background Approximately 8% to 21% of strokes affect adults aged 5× that of young controls (hazard ratio, 5.2; 95% CI, 2.8–9.4), compared with a 30% increase at 5 years for older patients (hazard ratio, 1.3; 95% CI, 1.3–1.4).

Effects of pyruvate administration on infarct volume and neurological deficits following permanent focal cerebral ischemia in rats [PDF]

open access: yesBrain Research 990(1-2): 1-7 (2003), 2007
Recent experimental evidences indicate that pyruvate, the final metabolite of glycolysis, has a remarkable protective effect against different types of brain injury. The purpose of this study was to assess the neuroprotective effect and the neurological outcome after pyruvate administration in a model of ischemic stroke induced by permanent middle ...
