Spontaneous recovery of pituitary function in patients with hypopituitarism is rare. We report the case of a 30-year-old man in whom hypopituitarism and sudden onset of bilateral hearing loss developed after a viral infection. No evidence of a mass lesion was detected on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging of the pituitary gland.

Six hips in four patients with hip pain, limited range of motion, no antecedent trauma, and normal laboratory studies demonstrated roentgenographic evidence of periarticular osteoporosis. The subchondral cortex was attenuated. There was little or no cartilage loss.

Consecutive visitors to a general medicine outpatient clinic were screened with a hypochondriasis questionnaire. Two thirds (n = 41) of those exceeding a preestablished cutoff met the criteria for DSM-III-R hypochondriasis when given a structured diagnostic interview, while the other third (n = 22) did not. The latter group showed significant decreases

A given cancer is produced by a unique combination of genetic alterations that target specific genes, most often leading to activation of oncogenes and inactivation of tumor suppressor genes. Traditional oncogenes, such as RasV12, are involved in maintaining pro-survival and proliferation signals activated in the cell.

AbstractIn clinical practice, it is important to assess the severity of liver fibrosis in patients with various liver diseases to determine the prognosis, decide treatment, and monitor disease progression and response to treatment. Liver biopsy is limited by its invasiveness and patient acceptability.

A recent letter to Nature (Vaadia et al. Nature, Lond. 373, 515-518 (1995)) presented compelling results concerning neuronal interactions in monkey cortex. Vaadia et al. made two fundamental points: (i) it is possible that cortical function is mediated by dynamic modulation of coherent firing among neurons; and (ii) these time-dependent changes in ...
