Genetic control of morphological transitions in a coacervating protein template

open access: yesSoft Matter
Point mutations and thermal energy enable control over the assembly of a thermoresponsive silica-binding elastin-like polypeptide, while MD simulations and silicification reveal how the soft template transitions from micelle to proteinosome.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Molecular Genetics of Dupuytren´s Disease

open access: yes, 2012
Dupuytren’s disease (DD) is a fibromatosis of connective tissue within the palm of the hands. It is characterised by progressive collagen deposition that leads to hardening and thickening of the connective tissue and results in permanent contraction of ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

The role of miR‐335‐5p in the redifferentiation of BRAF p.V600E thyroid cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The BRAF p.V600E mutation promotes thyroid cancer dedifferentiation and radioiodine resistance. Using a network approach, we identified miR‐335‐5p as a key regulator of BRAF‐mutated thyroid tumors. Restoring miR‐335‐5p increased thyroid‐specific gene expression and iodine uptake in cells and organoids.

The genetics of host adaptation in the parasitic plant Striga hermonthica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The obligately outbreeding root hemiparasite Striga hermonthica (Orobanchaceae)is a serious threat to subsistence agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. Resistance to this parasite in its crop hosts, such as rice, sorghum and maize, is not common, and the ...

Centriole and transition zone structures in photoreceptor cilia revealed by cryo-electron tomography

open access: yesLife Science Alliance
Cryo-electron tomography and subtomogram averaging reveal new structural features at the base of the light-sensing cilia of retinal rods, including the basal body, the Y-links between axoneme and membrane, and the ciliary necklace of the transition zone.

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Depleting Gene Activities in Early Drosophila Embryos with the 'Maternal-Gal4–shRNA' System

open access: yes, 2019
In a developing Drosophila melanogaster embryo, mRNAs have a maternal origin, a zygotic origin, or both. During the maternal-zygotic transition, maternal products are degraded and gene expression comes under the control of the zygotic genome.
