In a previous study, it was shown that the (111)fcc, (110)fcc and (111)bcc free surfaces do not assist the phase transitions as nucleation sites upon heating/cooling in iron (Fe) thin slabs.

The transition from surface mining to underground is a critical issue for metal mines. The commonly cited procedure cored by ultimate-pit-limit (UPL) methodology is restricted to maximize the profit from both surface and underground mining, due to the ...

Unique surface polaritons and their transitions in metamaterials
We investigated surface polaritons in a metamaterial composed of polar-crystal layers and antiferromagnetic layers. In a specific geometry, two surface polaritons were predicted, which are a unique ghost surface polariton (GSP) and surface hybrid-polarization polariton (SHP). The two surface polaritons occupy different segments of one smooth dispersion

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Analysis of Boundary-Layer Transition Induced by Surface Imperfections
This work presents an experimental study on the effects of surface irregularities, specifically bumps and gaps, on boundarylayer transition. Transition mechanisms are investigated using hot-wire anemometry and a Preston tube.

Molecular Simulation Study on the Wettability of a Surface Texturized with Hierarchical Pillars
By using molecular dynamics simulation, we investigate the wettability of a surface texturized with a periodic array of hierarchical pillars. By varying the height and spacing of the minor pillars on top of major pillars, we investigate the wetting ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Conserved binding mode but diverse interfaces of MreC‐PBP2 interactions
The crystal structure of abMreC reveals a conserved two β‐barrel architecture and provides structural insights into its role within the bacterial elongasome. The abMreC–abPBP2 complex model identifies the molecular basis of MreC‐mediated PBP2 recognition, contributing to the regulation of peptidoglycan synthesis.
