Charlotte Pommer: Resistance fighter and female pioneer of German anatomy

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines the biography and unique case of Charlotte Pommer (1914–2004), the only anatomist documented to have left the field during the Nazi period after encountering the regime's victims on the dissection table. While she is known for her resistance activities, newly presented documentation reveals her role as the provisional ...

Migrant success in UK Education: Are there lessons for government social mobility policy?

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract The school achievement and career aspirations of 23 sixth form students at a multi‐cultural urban academy in the UK are explored through interviews. The sample includes 16 s‐generation migrants, 6 UK‐born students with migrant parents and 1 UK‐born student, selected to represent a cohort of over 300 post‐16 learners.

Between soft power and suspicion: Chinese international students as diasporic actors in U.S.‐China geopolitical tensions

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This study examines the under‐theorized political role and identity of Chinese international students, who emerge as significant actors caught between U.S. soft power ambitions and rising geopolitical suspicion. Amid escalating U.S.‐China tensions, these students are forced to confront environments shaped by competing geopolitical discourses ...

No other choice: The fracturing of reflexivity in families' pathways into (non‐)elective home education in England

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract In England, education is compulsory, but schooling is not: it is legal for families to home educate their children. This form of education is officially termed by the Department for Education as ‘Elective Home Education’. As this designation implies, many families home educate as a positive and preferential ‘choice’.

Bypass transition to turbulence and research Desiderata

open access: yes, 1985
Bypass transitions are seldom mentioned in texts or meetings on instability and transition to wall turbulence. The nature of a number of bypass transitions is illustrated by example. Until this characteristics is truly understood predicting transition on

Numerical and Experimental Assessment of Oxygen Distribution in a Perfusion Bioreactor to Mimic the Osteochondral Niche

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Oxygen supply is a critical parameter in 3D cell cultivation using bioreactors. Since bioreactor designs often prioritise practical constraints, understanding the oxygen supply dynamics of the media is crucial for achieving either uniform or spatially controlled oxygen delivery.

Numerical Investigation of Transitional Oscillatory Boundary Layers: Turbulence Quantities

open access: yes
This study investigates the organized flow structures and turbulence quantities in a transitional oscillatory boundary-layer flow over a smooth bed using a DNS model set up by the open-source framework Nektar++ (v5.2.0).

A Method for Optical Quantification of Local Oxygen Limitations in Multiphase Bioreactors

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Spatial oxygen limitation is a major source of physiological stress and metabolic, scale‐dependent heterogeneity in aerobic bioprocesses. In gas‐liquid stirred tank reactors, oxygen availability is governed by hydrodynamics and mass transfer and is therefore inherently non‐uniform.

Predicting structural and statistical features of wall turbulence

open access: yes
The majority of practical flows, particularly those flows in applications of importance to transport, distribution and climate, are turbulent and as a result experience complex three-dimensional motion with increased drag comparedwith the smoother ...
