Water‐Energy Nexus: Benchmarking the Energy Efficiency of Drinking Water Treatment Plants Accounting for Heterogeneity

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The assessment of energy efficiency in water facilities is receiving increasing attention as a key strategy in the transition toward an energy‐neutral urban water cycle. This study evaluates the energy efficiency of 146 drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in Chile by applying a latent class stochastic frontier analysis (LCSFA) to account ...

Deterministic vs. Stochastic Methods for Frontier Estimation: Update and Illustration [PDF]

open access: yesOperations Research and Decisions
We estimate and compare a deterministic production frontier to a production frontier estimated using stochastic methods. This comparison is illustrated by estimating the Lerner index of monopoly power for a public sector producer.

Rice production structures in Sri Lanka: The normalized translog profit function approach

open access: yesAsian Journal of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2016
This study attempts to estimate the output supply and input demand elasticities of rice production using the restricted normalized translog profit function for the four major paddy producing districts; Anuradhapura, Hambantota, Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. In addition, elasticities of substitution between inputs are also estimated.

Assessing Eco‐Efficiency and the Cost of Carbon Abatement in Wastewater Treatment: Evidence From Spain

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a critical role in protecting public health and the environment but are also contributors to carbon emissions. Improving the eco‐efficiency of WWTPs is essential for advancing sustainability in the sector.

Cobb-Douglas, Translog Stochastic Production Function and Data Envelopment Analysis in Total Factor Productivity in Brazilian Agribusiness

open access: yesJournal of Operations and Supply Chain Management, 2009
The objective of this paper is to apply a Cobb-Douglas, Translog Stochastic Production Function and Data Envelopment Analysis in order to estimate inefficiencies over time as well as respective TFP (Total Factor Productivity) sources for main Brazilian grain crops - namely, rice, beans, maize, soybeans and wheat - throughout the most recent data ...

Adoption of Minimum Tillage and Mid‐Season Drainage in Rice Production and Their Impacts on Farm and Economic Performance

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates the effects of two greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation practices—minimum tillage and mid‐season drainage—on rice farmers' farm performance (e.g., crop yield and risk) and economic outcomes (e.g., income and vulnerability).

Determinants of technical efficiency in duck production in southwest Nigeria

open access: yesAgricultura Tropica et Subtropica, 2018
The need to complement the supply of animal products with other sources of poultry necessitates exploring the potentials of domestic duck production. Studies conducted on indigenous ducks in Nigeria have paid less attention to the resource requirements ...

Environmental Total Factor Productivity and the Cost‐Effectiveness of GHG Emission Reduction: The Case of Crop Production in China

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT China's diversified agricultural policies have effectively improved both the yield and environmental performance of the crop sector. Quantifying productivity trends and their drivers is key to formulating strategies for high‐quality and low‐carbon crop development.

Is Technological Heterogeneity the Key to Sustainable Coffee Production Efficiency?: A Latent Class Frontier Analysis in the Traditional Coffee Region of Colombia

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Coffee producers deal with uncertainty due to high volatility in coffee prices. To navigate these challenges, producers must balance the tradeoff between higher yield and better quality utilising heterogeneous technologies, such as intensive production methods and environmental management practices.
