Congestion management and transmission rights

The Economics of Electricity Markets provides a cutting-edge analysis of the critical issues involved in the design and operation of electricity markets, as well as an assessment of alternative institutional arrangements that have either been implemented or are under discussion in Europe and the US.

On transmission congestion and pricing

IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 1999
We provide a tutorial review, by example, of how to calculate optimal bus prices and congestion costs for a simple power system, using the "DC" loadflow approximation. It is also shown how to calculate the marginal effect of changing the impedance of a transmission on total system costs, and how this can be used for transmission planning purposes.

Short-term probabilistic transmission congestion forecasting

2008 Third International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation and Restructuring and Power Technologies, 2008
This paper introduces a probabilistic method for short-term transmission congestion forecasting, which is recently developed by EPRI. The proposed method applies the sequential Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) in a probabilistic load flow as the conceptual framework, adds all the significant uncertainties and their probability distributions to be modeled ...

Valuing Transmission: Reliability, Congestion, and Uncertainty

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2008
This paper investigates how the relationships between congestion, reliability, and uncertainty affect how electrical grid users value transmission system upgrades. The role that uncertainty plays in grid users' valuations of many of the congestion and reliability benefits of upgrades is emphasized.

Multistage transmission expansion planning alleviating the level of transmission congestion

2011 IEEE Trondheim PowerTech, 2011
This paper presents a multistage transmission expansion planning (TEP) which alleviates the level of transmission congestion during the planning horizon. Due to the combinatorial nature of the proposed TEP model, a Benders decomposition approach intertwined with a manipulated disjunctive model is applied to decompose the original TEP problem into a ...

Transmission Congestion Management in restructured power systems

2011 International Conference on Emerging Trends in Electrical and Computer Technology, 2011
Transmission congestion management is one of the critical and important tasks of the System Operator (SO). In this paper, congestion relief procedure has been discussed and compared with the objective of rescheduling cost minimization and proposed objective of real power loss minimization.

Congestion management in regional transmission organizations

2001 IEEE Porto Power Tech Proceedings (Cat. No.01EX502), 2002
The implementation of Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), as encouraged in FERC Order 2000 in the United States, is requiring market based ancillary services including congestion management. This paper reviews the congestion management options being deployed in three Southeastern United States RTOs and provide details on one RTO congestion ...

Congestion Control Based on Transmission Times

2002
Congestion leads to a severe performance degradation in multiprocessor interconnection networks. Therefore, the use of techniques that prevent network saturation are of crucial importance to avoid high execution times. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism that uses only local information to avoid network saturation in wormhole networks. In order to

Unit Commitment in Congested Transmission Systems

1999
The presence of physical limitations on the amount of power that may be transferred through a given transmission line gives rise to a very vigorous debate on how to account for these limits in a deregulated utility environment. Many pricing schemes that account for line flow limits are being discussed and debated [10, 11, 23, 35], but no consensus has ...
