Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated

On the Expediency of Laying Cable Power Lines with a Voltage of 6–35 kV Outside Settlements Instead of Overhead Power Lines

open access: yesИзвестия высших учебных заведений и энергетических объединенний СНГ: Энергетика, 2022
. It is noted that at present, 10 and 35 kV overhead power transmission lines are being laid outside the settlements of the Republic of Belarus on reinforced concrete vibrated (10 kV) and centrifuged (35 kV) poles that are characterized by low ...

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

Collapse prevention of pre-stressed electric transmission poles using glass fiber reinforced polymers

open access: yesCase Studies in Construction Materials
Natural hazards such as strong winds, typhoons, and earthquakes have caused massive economic losses in the form of damage to residential and life-line structures. Electric transmission infrastructures are life-line structures susceptible to severe damage

Multi‐pole voltage source converter HVDC transmission systems [PDF]

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, 2016
This study connects several modular multilevel converters to form multi‐pole voltage source converter high‐voltage dc (VSC‐HVDC) links which are suited for bulk power evacuation, with increased resiliency to ac and dc network faults. The proposed arrangements resemble symmetrical and asymmetrical HVDC links that can be used for bulk power transfer over

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Application of the General Method in the Design of Transmission Poles

open access: yesAdvances in Engineering Research, 2014
The work aims at designing a transmission pole structure which global security and stability is ensured through the application of the general method for verifying the lateral flexional buckling and lateral torsional buckling of structural components, as present in Eurocode 3 (EC3).

Slip Localization Intensification Mediated by Grain Boundary Sliding in a Polycrystalline Nickel‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The temperature dependence of fatigue behavior in nickel‐based superalloys is investigated through high‐resolution measurements of plastic localization. While increasing temperature reduces localization and enhances fatigue performance in René 88DT, Inconel 718 exhibits a sharp degradation at intermediate temperature due to intensified slip ...
