Weight Optimization of Transmission Towers

Volume 2: 23rd Design Automation Conference, 1997
Abstract This paper presents a new approach to the minimum weight optimization of transmission towers, which consists of formulating the optimization problem in a net weight objective function with no constraints. Genetic algorithms are employed to perform the optimization.

Transmission Towers with Cruciform Legs

Electrical Transmission and Substation Structures 2012, 2012
Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) has undergone a 500 kV transmission infrastructure build-out starting in 2002 that has resulted in construction of approximately 250 miles of new single- and double-circuit transmission lines. Several additional projects are currently in planning or design stages that may result in up to 130 miles of new 500 kV ...

Travel Time of Transmission Towers

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1985
In prediction of HV and EHV lightning outage rates, the tower surge response consists of two parameters, the tower impedance and the tower travel time. Of the two, tower travel time has a larger effect on the predictions. A new model for tower travel time is developed based on the relationship between tower capacitance and tower surface area.

Transmission tower development in the UK

Engineering Structures, 1993
Abstract This paper looks back on the development of the lattice steel tower and the use of lattice towers on overhead transmission lines in the UK over the past sixty years. It reviews the current regulations and the National Grid Company's approach to alternative tower types.

Wind Recommendations for Transmission Towers

Journal of the Structural Division, 1972
The recommendations concerning design wind loadings for transmission line towers show a wide divergence. When the varying intents of the codes are reviewed, closer agreement is obtained. For normal cable spans, the proper determination of the effective wind on the wires is the critical factor. The recommendations of Proc.

Construction manipulators of steel towers for the transmission of electricity

Proceedings of the 1997 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robot and Systems. Innovative Robotics for Real-World Applications. IROS '97, 2002
In this paper, the semiautomatic construction manipulators system for steel towers for the transmission of electricity is proposed. The piling up/expansion and contraction method is selected as the best construction method out of ten methods considered for the semiautomatic system. The first necessary function for construction manipulators is addressed
