Transmission of Hepatitis A Virus through Combined Liver–Small Intestine–Pancreas Transplantation

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2017
Although transmission of hepatitis A virus (HAV) through blood transfusion has been documented, transmission through organ transplantation has not been reported.

Using an improved multilayer amniotic membrane transplantation technique

open access: yesJournal of Ophthalmology, 2022
Background: Amniotic membrane (AM) is widely used in ophthalmic surgery. There are three major techniques for amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT): ‘onlay’ (‘patch’) technique, ‘inlay’ (‘multilayer transplantation’) and ‘sandwitch’ technique (a ...

The critical role of DNA damage‐inducible transcript 4 (DDIT4) in stemness character of leukemia cells and leukemia initiation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Stemness properties, including quiescence, self‐renewal, and chemoresistance, are closely associated with leukemia relapse. Here, we demonstrate that DNA damage‐inducible transcript 4 (DDIT4) is induced in the hypoxic bone marrow niche and is essential for maintaining the stemness of AML1‐ETO9a leukemia cells.

Hepatitis B Reactivation and Vaccination Effectiveness after Solid Organ Transplantation: A Matched Case-Control Study

open access: yesVaccines
Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are at significant risk of hepatitis B (HB) virus (HBV) reactivation (HBVr). Despite the clinical significance of HBVr after solid organ transplantation, data on the risk factors for HBVr and vaccine effectiveness ...

Investigating the cell of origin and novel molecular targets in Merkel cell carcinoma: a historic misnomer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study indicates that Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) does not originate from Merkel cells, and identifies gene, protein & cellular expression of immune‐linked and neuroendocrine markers in primary and metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) tumor samples, linked to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) status, with enrichment of B‐cell and other immune cell

Interruption of anti-thymocyte globuline treatment in solid organ transplantation is effectively monitored through a low total lymphocyte count

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
IntroductionAnti-Thymocyte Globulin (ATG) is a cornerstone in immune suppression for solid organ transplantation. The treatment is a delicate balance between complications arising from over-immunosuppression such as infections and cancer versus rejection

Prognostic value of thyroid hormone levels in patients evaluated for liver transplantation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
The thyroid hormones T4, T3, rT3 and TSH were assayed in 134 adult patients evaluated and accepted as potential liver transplant candidates at the Universty of Pittsburgh from March, 1981 to December, 1983.

Gut microbiota diversity is prognostic in metastatic hormone receptor‐positive breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and immunotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this exploratory study, we investigated the relationship between the gut microbiota and outcome in patients with metastatic hormone receptor‐positive breast cancer, treated in a randomized clinical trial with chemotherapy alone or chemotherapy in combination with immune checkpoint blockade.

Liver transplantation for alcoholic cirrhosis: Long term follow-up and impact of disease recurrence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Background. Alcoholic liver disease has emerged as a leading indication for hepatic transplantation, although it is a controversial use of resources. We aimed to examine all aspects of liver transplantation associated with alcohol abuse.
