Transport of Metabolites

Protoplasma, 1967
Transport phenomena have a fundamental role in cellular activity. The evidence of a limiting barrier is given by the fact that the content of living cells differs from that of the medium. In most cases the concentration of K+ in the cell is ten or more times higher than that of Na+, even in cells immersed in a medium where Na+ concentration exceeds K+.

Sphingolipid Transport

2010
Sphingolipids are a family of ubiquitous membrane components that exhibit multiple functional properties fundamental to cell properties. Sphingolipid transport represents a crucial aspect in the metabolism, signaling and biological role of sphingolipids.

Transport mechanisms in the ammonium transporter family

Transfusion Clinique et Biologique, 2010
Ammonium transport is mediated by membrane proteins of the ubiquitous Amt/Rh family. Despite the availability of different X-ray structures that provide many insights on the ammonium permeation process, the molecular details of its mechanism remain controversial.

Transportation of the injured

The American Journal of Surgery, 1957
To the Editor:— The subcommittee on transportation of the injured, of the committee on trauma, American College of Surgeons, submits the following outline for the early care and transportation of the injured. Effective emergency splinting of fractures for transportation to and within a hospital is a highly significant procedure in determining the ...

Regulated transport of the glucose transporter GLUT4

Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, 2002
In muscle and fat cells, insulin stimulates the delivery of the glucose transporter GLUT4 from an intracellular location to the cell surface, where it facilitates the reduction of plasma glucose levels. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that mediate this translocation event involves integrating our knowledge of two fundamental processes--the ...

Choline is transported by vesicular acetylcholine transporter

Journal of Neurochemistry, 2004
AbstractPreviously published results appeared to show that vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) does not transport choline (Ch). Because it is uniquely suited to detect transport of weakly bound substrates, a recently developed assay that detects transmembrane reorientation of the substrate binding site was used to re‐examine transport ...

Transport and Transportation Ontologies

World of Transport and Transportation
The objective of the study described in the article was to analyse the features of application of ontologies in the field of transport and transportation. It referred to the exploration of the methods of building ontologies as well as to the information uncertainty hampering building ontologies, based on introduced terms of «transport and ...

Energetics of Transport

Protoplasma, 1967
This brief review is intended specifically as a cementum to the papers in the section on physiology in this Symposium. Since those papers are diverse in approach and content this short essay can not cover the situation adequately. Much less could it aim at being comprehensive with respect to the field concerned with the energetics of transport ...
